Blue Hill Cemetery crematory in Braintree approved
What will be one of only a few crematories between Boston and Cape Cod is going to be built on an extension of Blue Hill Cemetery. Wrapping up a process that began last summer, the planning board unanimously voted March 13 to approve, with 77 conditions, housing the crematory in a 3,000-square-foot building across from the cemetery on the lot that also contains the cemetery’s offices, maintenance garage and caretaker’s home.
Plans call for the removal of approximately 3,000 square feet of pavement and the addition of two rain gardens to reduce runoff from the property. Since the building is in a flood plain, some fill would be needed to place the building above flooding projections.
Attorney Michael Modestino, who represents cemetery owner Gerald Ridge, said he was “pleased” that the board approved the four special permits and site plan review that were needed to bring the issue to a conclusion.
“We have to get a few bids from contractors,” Modestino said. “We anticipate that the crematory will be built this summer.”
According to Modestino, who initially appeared before the board in August, the proposal will serve the needs of the community because of an increase in the number of people who are opting for cremation. He argued that a self-contained and dignified crematory at the cemetery, which was incorporated in 1892, shouldn’t harm the air or the nearby wetlands.
Since the southern parcel known as 692-700 West St. had never been formally dedicated as a cemetery, as required by state law, it needed to be approved for burial purposes as an extension of the cemetery before a crematory could be constructed.
“It’s been a long process,” Modestino said. “We’re happy with the work the town did with us, particularly the effort of the planning staff.”
During a special Jan. 24 meeting held due to an error in the public notice of their Jan. 17 meeting, town councilors agreed 8-0 (District 4 Councilor Henry Joyce Jr. was not present) to grant the cemetery’s request to dedicate 28.3 acres of land on the southerly side of West Street for cemetery purposes as an extension of the cemetery, provided that this land wasn’t used for casket burials.
This was done at the recommendation of Mayor Joseph Sullivan and with the approval of the board of health.
Prior to the climactic vote, Modestino said that the cemetery would accept proposed crematory hours of operation of Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the proviso that it could seek additional hours, if needed, from the mayor’s office under special circumstances.

Leanne Graham — Numerous family members have been buried at Blue Hill Cemetery however, I've never had to deal with them until last month when my father passed. I worked with Amy in the office and she was amazing. She was responsive to my questions, never rushed me, provided information I was unaware about, and... Read more was compassionate. They even asked the maintenance crew to ensure my family member's sites were 'touched up' on the day of my father's services. I would definitely recommend this cemetery. For over 30 years I've been visiting the grounds of our ten family members; they have always been cared for and I trust that will continue under their ownership. Read less
