Altar (Wicca)

A Wiccan altar is a "raised structure or place used for worship or prayer",[1] upon which a Wiccan practitioner places several symbolic and functional items for the purpose of worshiping the God and Goddess, casting spells, and/or saying chants and prayers.

Types of altars[edit]

There are many types of altars Wiccans may choose to use during ritual. Depending on which rite they are performing, the material used for their altars may vary. Some say wood from an oak tree is best while others argue maple or teak are the only ones allowed. This is because in many circles, different types of wood are believed to carry certain magical qualities. For example, in one Wiccan tradition, oak symbolizes great strength and may be used to strengthen the rite they are performing. In another tradition, maple may be seen as the strongest. Whether that be a coffee table or a tree stump, it is up to the Wicca.[2]

Altar items[edit]

The altar is often considered a personal place where practitioners put their ritual items. Some practitioners may keep various religious items upon the altar, or they may use the altar and the items during their religious workings. According to Scott Cunningham, a popular Wiccan author, the left side of the altar should be considered the Goddess area; feminine or yonic symbols such as bowls and chalices, as well as Goddess representations and statues should be placed on the left. [3] The right side is designated for the God; phallic symbols such as the athame and the wand are placed to the right side, as well as God statuary and his candle.[4] The left and right associations vary according to personal preference, but the center area is almost always considered the "both" area, or the working area. In the center of the altar are kept the main symbols of the Wiccan faith, such as the pentacle.[5]

Some Wiccans arrange their altars to represent all four elements and directions.[6][7] In the North the earth element is represented; in the east is air, in the south is fire, and in the west water. These elements can be represented in various ways, but generally do not vary in elemental and directional correspondences. When placing items on an altar or when "calling on the elements" (a practice involving inviting the elements to be a part of the circle and lend their power) a practitioner will move deosil (clockwise or sunwise) and when dismissing the elements they will move widdershins (counter-clockwise).[citation needed]

Common items on a Wiccan altar include:

Some of the items represent the Earth's four elements, but elements may be represented more literally, with gems, salt, water, plant material, insect casings, etc.

Location of altar[edit]

It wasn't until 1951[2] that the last laws against Witchcraft in England were repealed. The witchcraft law repealed in 1951 made it illegal to claim to be a witch or a medium. The last person to be imprisoned under this law was Helen Duncan, a spiritualist medium. The death penalty for witchcraft in England was repealed in 1735. Today, Wiccans are able to practice more openly and share their beliefs across multiple platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

Being a religion that reveres nature, it seems most appropriate to practice in nature. Wiccan altars may be set up outside as well as indoors. Some Wiccans dedicate an entire room to their practice while others (especially those who share a living space) use a temporary altar. A temporary altar can be any flat surface that can be moved easily such as a coffee table. More permanent altars are left up for the Wiccan to return to for their rites and rituals.

Altar decor[edit]

There are eight Wiccan holidays, known as Sabbats, that celebrate the cycles and seasons of nature. These include the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Autumn & Summer), the mating habits animals and the reaping and sowing of crops. Based on the Sabbat, the altar is decorated accordingly. For example, the Summer Solstice altar cloth should be white and the altar decorated with Summer flowers, fruits and anything else that symbolizes Summer.[2] This goes for each Sabbat. Certain Wiccan traditions may have different colors but universally, the altar is usually decorated to represent the time of year.

Pagan Sacred Directions

The cardinal directions, north, south, east and west correlate to elements, colors and aspects of healing. While there are traditional representations of the directions, each person should think about what the direction means to them in relation to their place in the world. For instance, if a pagan practitioner lives where water is to their east, then east may represent water to them.

1North

In pagan traditions, the direction north is associated with the element earth. It is represented by rocks, clay, soil, salt, and sand. It is common to set the direction north in a pagan circle with one of these. Other connections to north are the color green, strength in the physical body, and the pagan symbol of the pentagram. When casting a circle, a pagan might set a bowl of salt to north.

2South

The direction south is associated with the element of Fire in Pagan traditions. Physical fire, as well as lightning, electricity, and candles represent the southern direction in Pagan rituals. Other connections with south include the color red and the pagan wand or staff. The direction south is invoked for reasons of passion and inner fire. When casting a circle, a pagan might set a lit candle to south.

3East

The direction east is commonly associated with the element air in pagan traditions. East is represented by feathers, chimes, or incense during pagan rituals and rites. East is also connected to the color yellow and the pagan athame or dagger. East is invoked for matters of intellect and the human mind. When casting a circle, a pagan might light incense in the eastern quarter.

4West

The element most often associated with the direction of west is water. Pagan traditions use shells and water as symbols to represent west. Pagan traditions also represent west with the color blue and the tool of a chalice or cup. West is invoked for matters of intuition and emotion. When casting a circle, the western quarter is often adorned with a chalice of water.

5Center

In Pagan traditions, the center represents the element of spirit. The color white is associated with center. The center is presented during rites and rituals by goddess representations. Another representation of the center is the color white. The center is invoked for reasons of connection to the divine, dream work, and the inner self. When casting a circle, the center may be adorned with a goddess symbol.

We Practiced Magic With A Real Witch
Calling in the quarters

kitchen witch, rachel patterson, art of ritual, calling quarters

Calling in the elements, calling the quarters, calling the Guardians of the Watchtowers, calling the Elementals – so many names!  But essentially we are calling upon the four elements from the four directions to join us in ritual and to lend their power, energy and protection.  These might be in the form of literally just inviting the elements in or it could be members of the Faerie world such as elementals or something like dragons, but even then you would usually call in dragons that correspond to the four elements.

The elements are Earth, Air, Fire and Water.  They are associated with the four compass directions, North, East, South and West.

The Guardians, sometimes called Guardians of the Watchtowers are the Guardians of the elements.  They too share the characteristics of the elements they are associated with.  They are not Gods but they are otherworldly.

You can also call upon dragon magic and invite dragon energy to each quarter or you could call upon four Archangels.   In a more shamanic or Native American style of ritual you might choose to call in the energy of animals to represent each quarter.

Anyone can call upon the elements or call the quarters.  If you are a solitary obviously you will do all the ritual procedures yourself, but if you are part of a group usually members of the circle (rather than the High Priest/ess or Arch Druid) will call the quarters, one for each element.

The elements are called in turn, you will find that most witches start in the North with Earth which represent the goddess as Mother Earth but druids tend to start with Air in the East because the sun rises in the East.  The person will turn and face the direction they are calling to and recite a chant requesting the presence of that element/elemental/quarter to join them in the ritual to add their power and energy to the rite.  In Wiccan rituals the person will sometimes draw an invoking pentagram in the air at the same time.

Each element is then called in turn until all four have been called upon.

Some rituals will have a candle at each direction point, which will be lit when the element has been called, this works well if you are at home but isn’t overly practical on a windy hilltop.

What we sometimes do in our group rituals is pass the talking stick around the circle asking each member to say a word that they relate or associate with each particular element, so for instance with the element of fire people might say; passion, volcano, energy, bonfire etc.

The elements exist in everything and you can quantify them by saying air is the wind, fire is a volcano but the elements are pure they exist in the elemental realms.  We can’t go there but they are places of energy vibration that intersect with our reality.  They are the forces of the entire universe and create the basis of magic.    The elements aren’t just represented by physical effects they also encompass feelings and emotions.  Something like passion and creativity would correspond to the element of fire and emotions are connected with the element of water.

Elementals are categorized within the group of Faerie beings that are associated with the four elements.  Gnomes are Earth, Slyphs are Air, Salamanders are Fire and Undines are Water.  The elementals are powerful beings and each carries with it the characteristics of the element it is associated with.    I think perhaps that the true base elementals are far more raw and undefined than some would believe, but again it is only personal experience that can help you decide.

As with most things the elementals have a hierarchy, not everyone subscribes to this belief but I will share it with you so that you have the details.  Each element has a guardian, a king, a ruler if you will.  Some traditions will have given names for the Guardians of each element or each Watchtower but essentially each Guardian stands guard at the gateway to the element it represents, once you call in that quarter the Guardian will open the door and allow the energy for that element to join you in ritual.   The Guardian not only controls the gateway and whether it opens or closes but also regulates how much energy is required for your ritual.

You could of course call in deities for each of the quarters, all gods and goddesses are associated with one (or sometimes two) of the elements.

I don’t think it matters what exact wording you use to call in the quarters, it doesn’t have to rhyme or be overly dramatic or poetic but always be respectful.  Most people will end each quarter call with the words ‘hail and welcome’ and in a group ritual this is repeated by those in circle.

Don’t forget your visualization skills for this part of the ritual, as you (or whoever it might be in circle) call in each element really use your third eye skills and see and feel that element entering the circle in all its glory.  There are lots of ways to visualize this, see the gateway opening, see the goddess/guardian/animal spirit at each direction, see the element itself or feel the element.

Each element also has a magical tool associated with it so you could place that item at each direction.  So a pentacle would represent earth, an athame for air, a wand for fire and a chalice for water.  You could also use simple representations such as soil or salt for earth, incense for air, a candle for fire and water for water.

You will also find in group ritual that people will tend to turn and face the direction that is being called in often with their arms down but palms facing front and hands open.  Once a quarter has been called they will turn and face the next direction.  You could also hold your arms in the air hands turned upwards.

Arm movements can be used very effectively when calling in the quarters such as using spirals; using your receptive hand start the spiral in the centre and move outwards in a clockwise motion, do this three times as you call in the quarter. (Use your other hand and work anti clockwise to dismiss the quarter at the end of the ritual).

You could also draw elemental symbols in the air at each quarter, or if you are standing on soil or sand you could even draw them on the floor, but perhaps not in marker pen on the carpet…  Earth being an inverted triangle with a line horizontally through it, air is an upright triangle with a line across, water is an inverted triangle and fire is an upright triangle.

At the end of the day do what works for you and sometimes less is more and the simpler you keep it the better it can work, if you are working with a solitary ritual you can just turn to each direction, close your eyes and visualize the element in your mind’s eye, no need for words even or any arm waving at all.

At one of our group rituals we decided to do something a bit different (as is our want) and we got the four quarter callers to take one step into the circle away from the edge, as each one called their element in they held one end of a piece of coloured ribbon, I then took the other end and walked it into the centre of the circle where I tied it to the cauldron.  I did the same for each caller with a different colour ribbon for each element.  When all four elements had been called in I walked to the centre and tied all four ends of ribbon together, binding the four elements to make the fifth element of spirit.

Be careful when calling in the Fae as they can be a bit naughty and make sure you ask them to leave when you have finished otherwise they can hang around and cause chaos…bless their cotton socks…

I have listed the four elements against the compass directions that I was taught and that I am comfortable with but it doesn’t make them set in stone, if you prefer to work with them in a different position then go with what feels right for you.   I think you also have to work with the location you are in; if you are on the beach and the ocean is on your right i.e. in the position of East it would seem far more sensible to work with that as your direction for water.

The Classical Elements in Wicca: Earth, Air, Fire, Water (and Spirit)

In Wicca and in many other Neo-Pagan spiritual traditions, the Elements—meaning the “classical elements” of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, plus the Fifth Element of Spirit—are the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, found in everything throughout the world and responsible for the eternal cycle of destruction and new creation that is at the heart of all existence.

The Elements are the literal forces of Nature, and so they are sacred and revered by Wiccans. They are incorporated into ritual and magic, and ultimately into the daily consciousness of those who live and work with the natural rhythms of life, death, and rebirth. Every aspect of material existence is bound up in Earth, Air, Fire and Water, while Spirit, the Fifth Element, is present in each of the other four.

A timeless philosophy

The concept of elemental states of matter has been with us since at least the time of the ancient Greeks, when what we now call the four “classical” Elements—Earth, Air, Fire and Water— were discussed by the great philosophers. These four substances were said to make up all of matter—nothing physical existed that was not composed of one or more of them. This elemental paradigm informed the medical practices of Greek society as well as their spiritual traditions, and ultimately came to influence the discovery of the physical elements of modern chemistry today.

Classical Elements

But the Greeks were hardly the only ones to grasp the idea of all things arising from a handful of natural phenomena. This concept is also found, in one form or another, in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, as well as in Hinduism, Buddhism, and religions within China and Japan. Eastern traditions differ slightly in their recognition of the Elements. For example, Chinese astrology distinguishes the Earth-based substances of Wood and Metal as individual Elements in their own right, while ancient Indian philosophy mirrors the original Greek system but adds Akasha—or “Space”—as a fifth Element.

This term, “Akasha,” was later borrowed by Western occultists and is used in some Wiccan traditions to refer to “Spirit.” Other traditions use the term “Aether,” which was Aristotle’s addition to the original Greek system, and which had a similar meaning.

The Classical Elements in ritual and magic—Elemental Magic

The Elements are understood to be distinct spiritual energies and are an integral part of Wiccan ritual. Typically, they are invoked at the start of ritual to participate in the celebration at hand and in any magical work performed. Each of the four classical Elements is associated with one of the four cardinal directions—North, East, South, and West—and each is called upon by the ritual celebrant, who turns to face each direction to address and invite the spirit of the Element into the circle. This is known as “Calling the Quarters” in many Wiccan traditions; others refer to it simply as invoking the Elements. These Elemental energies are then dismissed at the end of ritual, before the circle is closed.

Each Element is also represented by one or more ritual tools on the Wiccan altar. For example, the Pentacle symbolizes Earth, a designated candle represents Fire, a chalice—empty or filled—represents Water, and Air can be symbolized by a wand. There may be other tools further representing the Elements, depending on how elaborate one’s practice is, but for effective, balanced energy at least one representation for each should be present.

Furthermore, every herb, crystal, and color has specific Elemental associations. So do other natural objects—for example, you can represent Water with a sea shell, Air with a feather, Earth with a stone, and Fire with a pinch of smoldering herbs. When these correspondences are consciously acknowledged, and the assistance of the Element(s) formally requested, powerful spellwork can result.

Wicca for Beginners Book

Other Elemental influences

Many Wiccans incorporate other occult traditions into their practice, such as Western astrology and the Tarot, that also make use of the classical Elements as an organizing framework for knowledge. Each Zodiac sign is associated with an Element, creating four trios of signs that relate to each other at this Elemental level. These energetic associations, once understood, add great depth to interpretations of how people with different signs interact with each other. For example, Fire and Water signs don’t tend to form ideal romantic relationships.

Likewise, each of the four suits in a Tarot deck is linked to one of the classical Elements, the essence of which is a subtle aspect of the meaning of the card. The suit of pentacles, for example, is associated with Earth, and the cards in this suit relate to abundance and prosperity.

Connecting with the Wiccan Elements

Working with the Elements successfully in ritual and magic involves a willingness to learn more about them, but you also need to develop an intuitive sense of your individual relationship with the essence of each Elemental energy. Read more about Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit here and in other sources, but also seek out your own direct connection with them by interacting with them in Nature and through magic.

You probably already have an Element that you resonate with more than the others. Start exploring that connection, and see where it leads you. Then begin working with the Elements that have less personal resonance. As you make more and more progress along your spiritual path, you will find that your understanding of the Elements is coming more and more into balance.
