Success and talent aren’t always connected, especially in Hollywood. There are plenty of talented actors who achieved fame on the basis of their skills and hardworking demeanor, but there may be just as many who accelerated to fame via some combination of good connections, appearance, and plain dumb luck.

Let’s take a look at the 25 worst actors you’ll ever see in a major motion picture, ranked in descending order, moving toward the worst actor of all time.

25. Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck is smiling in front of a Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice poster.

Ben Affleck | Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The actor is certainly a movie star and has even received Oscars for producing and writing. Although he may have an eye for what makes a good movie, his acting performance is hardly the stand-out element in his best movies.

While Ben Affleck has worked in different movie genres, he has never truly disappeared into a role.

24. Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner is in a blue suit and wearing glasses in JFK.

Kevin Costner in JFK | Warner Bros.

Kevin Costner was once one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Because apparently audiences at that time were especially infatuated with white-bread blandness. It isn’t so much that Costner is irritating, it’s just that there’s virtually nothing compelling about him or any of his performances. Now that he’s faded into moderate obscurity, it only feels appropriate that he’s resigned to play cookie-cutter father figure roles, as in Man of Steel.

23. Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith is on one knee as a storm is coming in After Earth

Jaden Smith in After Earth | Columbia Pictures

The young actor got his start in the industry in The Pursuit of Happiness, thanks to his famous father, Will Smith. Jaden Smith’s debut in the film was moving given the sentimental story, but Jaden Smith hasn’t been able to give a compelling performance since.

His movie, After Earth, was torn apart by critics mostly because of his performance. This led to many calling into question whether he’ll ever give a good performance again.

22. Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves is on a rooftop and is holding up two guns in The Matrix.

Keanu Reeves in The Matrix | Warner Bros.

Keanu Reeves is, by all accounts, a nice guy, so it’s hard to be too incensed by his enduring success as an actor — at least, until you see one of his performances. His immovable, stone face singlehandedly sucks the life out of so many movie scenes, from Point Break to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Reeves always seems to be focusing on remembering his next line rather than conveying any sort of human emotion. His lack of expression and stiff line readings worked well enough when he was playing a San Dimas slacker like Theodore Logan for the Bill & Ted films, but they’ve only hurt his films since.

21. Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino is looking to the side and is lifting his sunglasses from his eyes.

Quentin Tarantino | Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images

The writer and director is very talented in those two fields and has even won Oscars for his writing. But Quentin Tarantino also tried to act in his films and even he has acknowledged that his acting abilities don’t always match up to his writing. He is often awkward and seeing him in a movie can pull the audience out of the story.

20. M. Night Shyamalan

M. Night Shyamalan is smiling on the red carpet.

The producer and writer had a good buzz in the beginning of his career, but ruined it with a series of bad movies. He is known for putting a twist in his films, and he also often has a cameo. He’s not exactly a good actor and his cameos at this point are more self serving since no one particularly looks forward to them.

19. Jamie Dornan

Jamie Dornan is smiling on the red carpet.

Jamie Dornan | Ian Gavan/Getty Images

The Fifty Shades of Grey star has the same struggle as the Twilight actors. Many of them just couldn’t quite overcome the material they were given, but later blossomed. Jamie Dornan is still in the thick of it though, and many critics have noticed his co-star Dakota Johnson has been fairing better than he has. Dornan’s performance as the seductive and dark Christian Grey is flat and boring.

18. Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg is holding up a gun.

Mark Wahlberg | Warner Bros.

You might think you like Mark Wahlberg’s performances, but check his filmography again and you’ll realize how few impressive roles he’s managed in his illustrious Hollywood career. Boogie Nights? All he had to do was look pretty and then act coked-up. The Departed? Be surly and curse a lot. The Perfect Storm? Look scared and scream over the sound of roaring waves.

Wahlberg’s career is defined by bland leading male roles wherein he’s rarely funny or has much chemistry with his co-stars. Look no further than M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening for a peek at what happens when Wahlberg tries playing someone more sensitive.

17. Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson is smiling in a suit.

Owen Wilson | Justin Tallis/AFP/Getty Images

Owen Wilson is severely handicapped by his inability to play anyone who isn’t Owen Wilson. His collaborations with director Wes Anderson as a performer and screenwriter have yielded some fine results of Owen in weirdo roles, such as Eli Cash in The Royal Tenenbaums.

However, the remainder of Wilson’s career has been filled with little more than mediocre roles played by a mediocre actor whose behaviors and mannerisms make it impossible to see him as anyone else. But hey — at least he’s not as boring as his brother.

16. 50 Cent

50 Cent is in a prison uniform and behind bars in Power.

50 Cent in Power | Starz

The rapper has managed to maneuver into acting, producing, and writing. It’s definitely a smart move and many other rappers have done it, but 50 Cent doesn’t quite have the charisma or ability to make the audience believe him.

15. David Spade

David Spade is in a mullet and side burns as Joe Dirt.

David Spade | Columbia Pictures

The actor typically sticks to comedy. One of his highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes is The Emperor’s New Groove, which benefits greatly from it being an animated Disney movie. But most of his movies are rated “rotten” and that’s typically because his jokes don’t land.

14. Kirk Cameron

Kirk Cameron is holding a candy cane and jumping in Saving Christmas

Kirk Cameron in Saving Christmas | Camfam Studios

The actor started out as the beloved teen heartthrob, Mike Seaver in Growing Pains. But over the years Kirk Cameron’s career took a turn, mostly because he became more religious. This led him to acting and producing movies like Saving Christmas, which was referred to as “The Room of Christmas movies” by Christy Lemire. Cameron has definitely limited himself as an actor and it has hurt his career.

13. Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan is giving two thumbs up at a podium in front of a Wrestlemania poster.

Hulk Hogan | Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

There have been many wrestlers who tried to crossover into acting and some are successful. However, Hulk Hogan’s film roles never really strayed from the character he played in the ring. Hogan doesn’t have any range and none of his movies are well-written enough to make up for that.

12. Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry as Madea in Boo A Madea Halloween

Tyler Perry in Boo! A Madea Halloween | Lionsgate Films

Tyler Perry is definitely a hard worker given he produces, acts, and writes. But his success might be more about his work ethic than his ability to resonate with an audience. Perry is mostly known for his character Madea, who he has managed to base an entire franchise on. Madea is one of his better characters, but the role still doesn’t measure up and has limited him as an actor.

11. Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser is pointing a gun in The Mummy.

Brendan Fraser | Universal Studios

The actor had a good run and starred in big movies like The Mummy, Bedazzled, and more. He has made more bad movies than good, but that didn’t matter much until they started losing money. Now the actor isn’t seen as often.

10. Steven Seagal

Steven Seagal is talking into a microphone.

Steven Seagal | Mayela Lopez/AFP/Getty Images

The actor’s work typically relies on his martial arts and fighting skills rather than his acting technique. He got by with the former for a long time, but later in his career he was no longer physically able to do some of his old stunts.

9. Hayden Christensen

Anakin looks serious and is wearing a hood in Star Wars.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith | 20th Century Fox

The actor played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels. Those movies were torn apart, especially the actor’s portrayal of the character who would later become Darth Vader. A big part of the problem with his character is that he was written to be a creepy petulant stalker, making it hard to believe he becomes the iconic villain we all know and love.

However, the role wasn’t helped by the actor’s stoic expression and weirdly soft voice. After being criticized for his performance the actor has taken much smaller roles.

8. Taylor Lautner

The Twilight movies drew a lot of deserved flak for pandering to teenage fans while investing minimal effort into the films themselves. Even the leads, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, sleepwalked through the ordeal before receiving varying amounts of critical acclaim in other projects. But the third person in the Twilight love triangle, shirtless werewolf Taylor Lautner, has found little success since.

It only takes one viewing of his starring vehicle Abduction to understand why (though good luck making it all the way through the film), as Lautner can barely manage a convincing line reading or a lick of chemistry with his co-star throughout.

7. Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage, actor

Nicolas Cage | Sascha Steinbach/Getty Images

Many might insist that Nicolas Cage is, in fact, a good actor who throws himself wholeheartedly, almost foolishly, into the worst roles. We take the opposite stance, insisting that Cage is an over-the-top madman whose successful performances in films like Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation are simply flukes, allowing him the freedom to overact — as a train wreck alcoholic in the former and a panic-ridden screenwriter in the latter — in situations where it actually works.

Great as those films may be, the bad of Cage’s career far outweighs the good, littered as it is with performances both half-assed (Left Behind) and laughably unhinged (Face/Off, Wicker Man).

6. Rob Schneider

Rob Schneider is smiling and leaning against a wall.

Rob Schneider | Kristian Dowling/Getty Images

Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions has allowed the actor — who is actually talented when he occasionally tries — to keep his group of friends employed for a couple decades now. Thus, Rob Schneider is still in the public eye (barely), pretending he has comedic value even when he’s not dressing up like various minorities and adopting offensive accents in Sandler’s films.

His starring vehicles including Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and The Hot Chick have somehow been even more dire and aggressively unfunny than his offensive supporting roles.

5. Pauly Shore

Pauly Shore is posing on the red carpet and is wearing a striped shirt and a hat.

Pauly Shore | Brad Barket/Getty Images

The actor has been in multiple terrible movies including Bio-Dome and The Wash. He typically plays the same character over and over, proving he doesn’t have any range. He acts in the comedy genre but doesn’t garner any laughs, making his performances awkward and tiresome.

4. Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee fighting each other in the Roman Colosseum

Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee in The Way of the Dragon | Bryanston Distributing

The action star definitely has a fanbase, but he also has many bad movies on his resume. Believe it or not, he is the worst actor based on Rotten Tomatoes ratings, according to Slate. Chuck Norris has an average rating of 18.4% which is pretty rotten.

3. Eddie Griffin

Eddie Griffin is posing shirtless with an afro in Undercover Brother.

Undercover Brother | Universal Pictures

The comedian starred in Undercover Brother, which was a big hit and fondly remembered. But most of his other comedies aren’t well-reviewed and included other bad actors. According to Slate, Eddie Griffin is also considered one of the worst actors with an average rating of 24.1% on Rotten Tomatoes.

2. Alan Bagh

Alan Bagh is talking on the phone in a car.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror | Moviehead Pictures

The actor played Rod in Birdemic: Shock And Terror, which is a bad film in every sense including Alan Bagh’s acting. But the good thing is that many would say his wooden performance is so bad you can get a laugh out of it. He has since been doing more background acting.

1. Tommy Wiseau

The Room is one of the worst films of all time, and most of the credit for its ineptitude belongs to Tommy Wiseau, the film’s star, writer, director, and primary investor. His otherworldly accent makes his lines unintelligible even when they aren’t overdubbed or nonsensical, and his fatigued face, which recalls a partially melted mannequin, doesn’t make his emotions any easier to read.

It’s no wonder The Room is Wiseau’s only feature-length role … who would cast him except for himself?

Additional reporting by Nicole Weaver.

    Actors and actresses bad

Some Hollywood actors and actresses, bless their souls, just don't have what it takes to please a film critic.

On the silver screen, they laugh. They cry. They wince dramatically, as if detecting the far-off aroma of bacon. And when their performance is done, a stodgy man at the Chicago Tribune or a curmudgeonly woman at the New York Times deems it "mind-numbingly juvenile" or "less thrilling than an audit."

Often this criticism is well-deserved. For every golden nugget of talent in Hollywood, there are a dozen lumps of coal — some of whom manage to compress themselves into diamonds, befriend casting directors, and land starring roles in films.

We were curious: Who among these big-name actors and actresses most routinely appears in terribly reviewed movies? And who most frequently wins critics' praise?

    How we made our ranking

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

Earlier this week, we crawled through a bunch of data from Metacritic to determine which big-budget blockbusters got the worst reviews. Metacritic's methodology is pretty straightforward: It aggregates movie reviews from major newsoutlets, weights them based on a variety of factors (more on that here), then gives them a composite score on a 0–100 scale (0 = terrible, 100 = resounding acclaim).

This time we turned to Metacritic to determine thescores of actors and actresses based on the films they've been in. To limit our search to relatively well-known performers, we set a series of criteria:

    • The actor/actress must have performed in at least 10 films (writing, directing, and producing credits were omitted).
    • At least one of these films had to have grossed $30 million or more at the box office, adjusted for inflation.
    • At least one of these films had to be within the past five years (we only wanted semi-active performers).

A note to our critics: This data isn't perfect or definitive. For one, our analysis is based on reviews of movie critics, whose opinions often differ greatly from the public's. The number of genuine reviews available for older films (pre-2000) is also somewhat limited on Metacritic.

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

Lastly, it should be said that a film review is not always indicative of an individual actor's ability or talent. There are many factors that go into creating a good (or bad) movie — the screenplay, the direction, the supporting cast — and a critic may pan a movie for any number of reasons, even if the leading man or woman turned in an excellent performance.

Nonetheless, analyzing film reviews gives us a pretty good sense of where today's stars sit with critics and who tends to stay marooned in a sludgy mire of crappy films.

The worst-reviewed actors and actresses in Hollywood

So let's start at the bottom: Who are the worst-reviewed actors in Hollywood?

Below, we've included a percentage breakdown of each actor's films (negative = 0-39; mixed = 40-60; positive = 61-100), as well as the average score of all films he's appeared in. When reviewing these numbers, keep in mind that the overall average for actors and actresses who met our criteria was 54/100.

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

You may recall Rob Schneider from classics like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999) or The Hot Chick (2002). Thanks in part to these efforts, he is the worst critically rated actor in Hollywood.

Not a single one of the 16 films Schneider has appeared in has secured a Metacritic score higher than 54. Eleven of them received soul-crushingly bad reviews: In response to the sequel to Deuce Bigalow, 2005's European Gigolo, Roger Ebert once famously quipped, "Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks" — a line that later became the title of one of his books.

Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Images

Schneider's critical failure largely falls on the shoulders of Adam Sandler, who is ranked second here. The majority of the poorly reviewed films Schneider appears in are Sandler flicks, in which he plays a recurring character who yells, "You can do it!"

In his "golden era" — 1995 to 1999 — Sandler starred in a string of well-rated, relatively funny films. Then, starting with Little Nicky (2000), he began to realize that he could act in terrible films and still make money. His average Metacritic score has since plummeted from 52 to 36.

The actors on this list disproportionately appear in comedy or action films. This holds true for actresses as well: 80 percentof the movies the 15 worst-rated leading womenstar in are of the romantic comedy or action genres.

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

Though Jennifer Love Hewitt's last movie was in 2013 (a low-budget rom-com called Jewtopia), her ability to star in poorly rated films is timeless: Of 10 total films, seven rank below 40 points on Metacritic.

Actresses like Katherine Heigl, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Jennifer Lopez almost exclusively act in romantic comedies. Similarly, many women who take on leading roles in action films seem to have very low Metacritic scores — including Halle Berry, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002.

The best-reviewed actors and actresses in Hollywood

Next, let's take a look at the actors and actresses who most routinely star in critically acclaimed films. Who are the film critic darlings?

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

With an average score of 73, Daniel Day-Lewis seems impregnable to bad reviews. The 58-year-old Englishman is one of the most selective actors in the industry: In a career that has spanned nearly five decades, he's participated in only 11 films.

His judiciousness has paid off: No film of his has ever received a negative aggregate score. He's also won three Academy Awards for best actor in a lead role — a feat that is unmatched by any other actor in history.

While the worst-rated actors list was mostly composed of comedy and action stars, leading men in dramas dominate here. Actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Lee Jones, and Sean Penn typically participate in more dynamic screenplays that allow for a wide emotional range.

Again, we see a similar trend for the top-reviewed actresses.

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

Young stars like Carey Mulligan and Jennifer Lawrence rank high, but so do older actresses with established dramatic careers.

On the worst-rated actresses list Sharon Stone was the oldest, at 58. But here, four actresses are 60-plus: Charlotte Rampling (70), Meryl Streep (66), Maggie Smith (81), and Judi Dench (81).

With the notable exception of Jennifer Lawrence (who won an Oscar for her role in the comedy-drama The Silver Linings Playbook), these women are mostly known for their leading roles in drama films.

Film critics are harder on comedy and action films

To reiterate, the worst-rated actors/actresses star mostly in comedies and action films, while the best-rated are heavier on drama-oriented films.

What exactly is going on here? Is this indicative of a larger trend?

We took a random sample of 200 films from each genre listed on Metacritic, then averaged out the scores. As it turns out, critics rate comedies and action flicks much more harshly than dramas.

    Zachary Crockett / Vox

This disparity between genres may partly explain why rom-com-heavy stars like Katherine Heigl and Vince Vaughn rank so unfavorably: Thespians who stick mainly to comedy forever relegate themselves to critics' least favorite genre.

While dramatic films provoke thought, and appeal to universal truths that we all contemplate, comedy is subjective and lends itself to polarized reviews. Comedy actors' poor showing here isn't necessarily indicative of bad acting.

Still, an actor's talent is at least a little bit correlated with the quality of the films he appears in. And if you have any doubts about that, we suggest you watch a Rob Schneider highlight reel.

We've hit peak lens flare. Here's how it started

Top 10 Bad Actors And Actresses

    10. Nicolas Cage, 55

Our first entry is a little divisive, because some people claim that the eccentric acting of Nicolas Cage is fantastic. Is he the worst actor in the world, or is he the best? He certainly isn’t anything in between – his outlandish history of bombastic performances from Face/Off to Ghost Rider prove it! Cage has been nominated for a shocking ten Razzies. Check out this infamous scene from The Wicker Man where Nick is tortured with bees!

    9. John Travolta, 65

John Travolta is a fascinating showcase in how a limited actor can excel in the right role. His career has died and been resurrected more times than you can count! He was electrifying in Grease, Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty … but then there’s Battlefield Earth and his seven other Razzie-nominated roles which feel more amateur than Hollywood. Check out this amazingly bad scene from Battlefield Earth:

    8. Kristen Stewart, 29

Kristen Stewart’s breakout role as Bella Swan in the Twilightfranchise made her one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. However, her performance was notoriously dry, monotonous and unconvincing – and she hasn’t succeeded in shedding her uncharismatic image in the decade since. Take a look at her unconvincing debut from 2008:

    7. Quentin Tarantino, 56

A masterful writer and director, the Oscar-winning Quentin Tarantino is one of the greatest working auteurs. Despite acknowledging his acting skills don’t quite rise to the challenge, Quentin occasionally casts himself in his own movies. His awkward performances are exacerbated by the contrasting brilliance of his films. Check out his turn as Jimmie Dimmick in Pulp Fiction for the perfect example.

    6. Arnold Schwarzenegger, 72

Who doesn’t love Arnie? His superhuman appearance and effortless charisma catapulted him from unknown Austrian immigrant to the epitome of the American dream. He excelled as an emotionless robot in 1984’s Terminator, but his wooden acting and distinctive accent makes for some hilariously bad performances. Luckily he has enough awesome one-liners and action chops to make up for it. Feast your eyes on this masterpiece and SHUT UUUUUUUP:

    5. Hayden Christensen, 38

Is it fair to judge an actor on their delivery of George Lucas’ notoriously horrific dialogue in the Star Wars prequels? Even critically praised actors like Samuel L. Jackson and Natalie Portman couldn’t make it feel natural. But Hayden Christensen’s awkward portrayal of Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader is downright hard to watch. This infamous scene showcases both Lucas’ bizarre dialogue and Christensen’s painful delivery:

    4. Adam Sandler, 53

You might think he’s funny in Billy Madison, but with eleven Razzie nominations under his belt, you’ll be hard-pressed to make the case that this SNL alumnus is a good actor. Here’s a taste of his signature imbecilic acting in 2000’s Little Nicky.

    3. Jaden Smith, 21

Would Jaden Smith be a Hollywood star if his dad wasn’t Will Smith, one of the most beloved actors of the last few decades? We can’t know for sure ... but come on, the answer is no. Jaden’s most famous performance came in 2013, starring alongside his dad in the critical and commercial disaster After Earth. He was ruthlessly panned by critics. Take a look at this ‘emotional’ scene to understand why.

    2. Madonna, 61

Madonna is mostly known for being a pop-star … and there’s a reason for that. With 6 Razzie Awards, she holds the record, thanks to her performances in movies like Shanghai Surprise and Who’s That Girl. She might feel like a virgin… but she doesn’t seem like an actress.

    1. Sylvester Stallone, 73

The Italian Stallion holds the record for most Razzie nominations with a whopping 19! His acting as Rocky Balboa has been praised – but his trademark wooden drawl has earned him the top spot as the worst actor of all time. Congratulations? Try not to laugh at Sly in 1984’s Rhinestone

    5. Jared Leto

A lot of Chevy Chase’s old SNL co-stars have reported not getting along with him. He also clashed with Community showrunner Dan Harmon and called the beloved sitcom “f***ing mediocre”.

    3. Bruce Willis

Director Kevin Smithsaid that working with surly Bruce Willis on Cop Out was “soul-crushing” and called him “a f***ing dick.” Sylvester Stallone tweeted about Willis, “GREEDY AND LAZY …… A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE.”

    2. Casey Affleck

While making I’m Still Here, Casey Affleck was sued by one of the film’s producers, and the director of photography, for sexual harassment. Hard to work with is an understatement.

    1. Kevin Space

This one goes without saying. Spacey’s career appears to be over in the wake of allegations that he sexually abused a young male actor.
