A kick or knee to the groin is no joke. Any man who has experienced receiving one in the nuts will do whatever it takes to avoid it from ever happening again.
Even though groin strikes are forbidden in combat sports, accidents happen and it’s a hard lesson for those who are ill-prepared. Groin guards, also known as groin cups or groin protectors, are essentials for all sorts of full contact sports.
Think of them as shields designed to protect the “nuts and bolt”. When it comes to the crown jewel, you definitely need the best groin guard for Muay Thai sparring or fighting. Your future kids will thank you for that.
What are the Best Groin Guards?
The best groin guard for Muay Thai should be able to encompass the “complete package” in its entirety i.e. no slippage, while not overly bulky to hinder movement.
The guard should fit firmly such that it doesn’t shift about during movement but should also be comfortable.
Last but not least, the cup itself should be tough and durable for proper protection against accidental hard knocks.
No groin guard is % injury proof but wearing one reduces the impact, thereby lowering the risk of injury and minimizing the pain. Before we go into the detailed individual reviews, here’s a quick look at my picks of the best groin guards for Muay Thai:
What to Look Out For
There are 3 main types of groin protectors based on how they are worn. The 3 types are jock straps, compression shorts and the Thai-style lace straps.
There are pros and cons to each design based on comfort (how comfortable it is to wear for prolonged periods), security (stay secured during sparring/fighting so you don’t have to keep adjusting), and protection (how much of an impact it can absorb).
The other thing to look out for when selecting a groin guard is the material used for the cup and its industrial design. Many modern manufacturers use plastic or a plastic composite material compared to the harder steel used by Muay Thai brands.
Plastic cup does not absorb impact well as it can flex inwards. There have also been reported instances where plastic cups actually break or crack on impact. However, there are exceptions to the rule as you will see in my recommendations below.
Best Groin Guard for Muay Thai
Men are more vulnerable to the dangers of groin strikes, biologically speaking. However, female fighters are just as prone to receiving low blows which can hurt them too. So in this review, we will look at groin guards made specifically for men and also women.
Here is a closer look at some of the top groin protecting options available in the market:
Diamond MMA Athletic Cup
- Take a direct hit and stay in the game. No more pain. No more nausea. No more debilitating injuries or lengthy recovery time. The Diamond MMA Cup is the ultimate in groin protection for men who love
- Designed for repeated high impacts in contact sports. Take direct hits to the groin with no recovery time needed. The Diamond cup geometry deflects and distributes force. Soft elastomer edge minimizes
- In combination with the Diamond MMA compression shorts or 4-strap jock systems (sold separately), no-shift technology keeps this cup in position even when repeatedly struck. The cup won’t shift even
The Diamond Athletic Cup is the ideal choice for those training MMA and Muay Thai on the side. The cup is designed to be used together with the jock strap or the compression shorts. For those training purely Muay Thai, the jock strap is a more appropriate option for wearing under Muay Thai shorts.
Designed by Stanford engineers, the cup itself features a polycarbonate core which is the same material used for bulletproof glass. In their tests, the Diamond Cup is able to withstand repeated hammering of a pound sledge hammer without breaking while many competitors are shattered with one blow. The Diamond Cup is the gold standard in terms of toughness and protective quality. Nothing comes close.
It is heavily endorsed by UFC and MMA athletes, and even medical professionals who attest to the cup’s protective qualities and durability. It is also recommended by Joe Rogan, a often-quoted propagator of the product. The only con is its price. But if you can afford, there is just no competition.

Lo-bloo Thai Cup
Lo-bloo (pun for lo-blow?) has been getting lots of rave reviews from many Muay Thai fighters. After trying one out myself, I now get what the hype is all about.
The Lo-bloo may be a Swedish brand but it is inspired by the traditional steel cup used by Thai fighters. The end product strikes the right amount of balance between protection, security and price.
Although it is made of plastic material (no details provided on its composition), it is exceedingly hard. It boasts a patented fitting system, and like Thai cups, it takes some practice to get it to fit right.
The Lo-bloo fits comfortably, staying properly secured during sparring and can be worn under Muay Thai shorts. The security is provided by a waistband and thin elastic straps.
This system is very similar to the classic Thai style steel cup but offers the advantage of being easier to put on, although some bigger folks have commented on the straps being a little tight.
The added advantage of Lo-bloo cups is the ventilation holes which helps to keep things cool down there.
There are not as many options available for women who sometimes choose to forgo the groin guard. The wonderful thing about Lo-bloo is that it fills this gap by making pelvic protectors for women. It’s no surprise that female fighters have taken to Lo-bloo guards.

Thai Steel Cup
No products found.
The OG groin protector in the world of Muay Thai. For the Thai fighters, steel cups are worn during fights but not so much for sparring.
The steel cup is secured with three laces for extra safety. This is definitely the most secure option since it doesn’t shift around but it can be a hassle to put on compared to jock straps. Once you get used to it though, it does get easier to put on.
Steel cups seem like the most natural choice when it comes to safeguarding the crown jewels. It’s steel over balls and you can’t go wrong with that level of protection.
Instead of you feeling it, your sparring partner is more likely to feel the impact more than you if he kicks or knees below the belt.
If you are competing in Muay Thai, this is a recognized competition standard which makes it the right cup to get. There are other steel cup options from brands like Ring to Cage, RDX, and Hayabusa but the Fairtex (and Twins Special) is the one that is tried and tested on a daily basis in the stadiums of Bangkok.

Shock Doctor Ultra Pro (Budget Option)
A jock strap option with a “Ultra Pro Carbon Flex” cup from Shock Doctor. The Carbon Flex (plastic) cup is basically a rubber cup with added carbon fiber material which can actually flex on impact (not a good thing).
The Shock Doctor jock strap itself is comfortable but not as secured when compared to the other options on the list.
This is a cheaper plastic cup model and I hesitate to recommend this. However, if there is only light sparring involved and you’ve got a smaller budget, this could be worth the consideration.
Ultimately, if you want a peace of mind, I would recommend going with better protections namely the Diamond MMA and Lobloo cups.

They are compulsory for competitions and highly recommended for sparring. Some coaches and trainers mandate the wearing of groin protectors for all sparring to ensure the safety of their fighters.
It doesn’t matter what level you are at because when it comes to groin accidents, everybody hurts. Internal bleeding/swelling is a potential risk from devastating groin injuries.
If you are sparring often or fighting, investing in a high-quality groin guard can be a life-saver.

One of the most common and most important pieces in any contact sport is the protective cup. In Mixed Martial Arts there are many situations where you are happy that you decided to purchase a cup. We recommend that a cup would generally be worn during either training or sparring, but you don’t need to break to bank to buy decent protection. There are plenty of well-priced and low-cost options available on the market. Wearing a cup during training will help you get used to wearing one and will make you feel a lot more comfortable when your drilling techniques, just incase any freak limbs were to fly in that region, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Our Recommended Cups for MMA or BJJ
Diamond MMA Cup and Compression Shorts
When it comes to good-fitting and excellent protection, you can’t beat the Diamond MMA cup. The Diamond MMA Cup is one of the best designed groin protection products on the market and can be used for any contact sport. The cup itself feels solid and is shaped to fit comfortably to give increased protection around the groin area. You can take some seriously hard strikes on this guard and you won’t feel a thing!
The Diamond MMA Compression Shorts are really what makes this product stand out from the rest, the shorts have a build in Jockstrap that securely holds the cup in place. Where most compression shorts just have a pocket for the cup, the Diamond MMA Cup’s shorts are designed not just the cup, but make sure that it is securely in place.
- Seemless between cup and shorts
- Very comfortable
- Extremely curable
- Some people said shorts run a little tight
Next on our list is the one company that has pretty much cornered the combat sport protection market, Shock Doctor. Shock Doctor are world leaders when it come to protecting fighters and sports stars. If you’re on a budget and looking for some great protection, this is the product for your needs.
The BioFlex cup fits comfortably and have an internal system designed to help keep the cup in place. this is a great product for someone who is looking to get into the sport and not looking to spend too much money.
- Flexible cup
- Soft waistband
- Remove able cup
- Elastic can be tight when new
Under Armour Men's HeatGear Armour Compression Shorts w/ Cup, White ()/Graphite, Large
Under Armour is another front runner when it comes to MMA Cups. The Under Armour is designed to be lighter than most on-the-shelf products but that doesn’t mean it lacks in protection. This is a perfect cup for BJJ and Grappling due to it’s size and weight. The Cup itself is quite an unusual shape and features a unique design that the designers claim is anatomically correct.
This Cup is extremely comfortable to wear and fit extremely well when worn with compression shorts. The compression shorts are a hybrid shorts, jockstrap design, with jockstrap-style straps built in the inside of the shorts. This Cup has been featured on Sports Science TV Show and has also help up to some pretty impressive tests. The Cup comes in 5 sizes and the compression shorts come in 11 sizes, so you know that everything is going to fit just right. Just don’t ask us how to measure everything.
- Anti Odor Technology
- Temperature Controlling
- Cup can feel a little stiff
Venum are one of the leading companies to provide excellent quality combat gear at a reasonable price, and that also includes protective cups. The Venum Challenger Cup is a similar design to other groin protection products, so it doesn’t win any points on style. But what it does win on is value. For $27 you can have some extremely good crotch protection that doesn’t only protect you well but is comfortable for long training sessions.
The Jock strap does a good job of holding the cup in place but we would recommend some compression shorts to go over it, just to help keep it all in place. Venum make excellent low-cost training gear and this product is no exception. If you are looking for a basic but well designed cup for a decent price then I suggest giving this a shot.
- Trusted MMA Brand
- High-quality product
- Can withstand hard blows
- Jock Strap not as secure as compression shorts
McDavid Compression Shorts and Cup
McDavid provide a huge range of protection gear for mixed martial artists, and the cup that they make is probably one of the best cups for MMA. This cup can withstand some seriously heavy strikes and keep you safe and ready to fight. The Compression shorts are adjustable through a number of straps, which keep the cup in place.
While this is not as good as the Diamond cup, this product certainly does the job, especially when it comes to MMA. This cup is nice a strong and the strap design is one of the best on the market.
- Breathable material
- Durable cup
- Cup runs a bit big for some
How to choose the best groin protector
Groin protection and cups are very important when it comes to grappling, mixed martial arts and any contact sports. While some come with shorts, others come with a jock strap and even traditional thai comes come with fabric you need to ie up! The key is finding the right protection that you’re going to find useful and more importantly comfortable.
Illegal low blows
But you’re probably thinking to yourself, “aren’t groin shots illegal in mixed martial arts?” Well while they are, it doesn’t mean that you’re not going to get kicked in that region by accident. Even in a pure submission grappling match, there are a lot of limbs flying and the real chance of you getting clipped somewhere you don’t want to get hit. A lot of MMA schools require you to wear a cup to class, so you might as well make the investment in a product that will last you years and not get cracked on the first shot.
What kind of groin protection is available?
Technology for cups hasn’t changed much over the last few years so brands that were reliable 5 or so years ago still stand true today. The true test of a good fitting cup includes a hard plastic fit around the groin area, and a flexible or padded edge to stop any chaffing during training.
Compression shorts or Jock Straps
Generally you can wear your cup with either a jock strap, which is the traditional way to wear one or compression shorts that have a pocket for the cup. Compression shorts are more secure than jockstraps, but with the security comes an increased cost. The benefit of compression short are that they are normally made from the same material as rash guards, meaning they material wicks sweat and moisture away from the area. A jock strap is normally used for more mobile contact sports so for MMA and grappling, we would tend to lean towards the compression shorts
If you are sparring very heavily then a steel cup maybe an alternative to plastic cups available. These are recommended for anyone who is sparring full contact Muay Thai. Steel cups are overkill for grappling, but they are very durable and if tied of correctly, are also extremely secure.
What material are cups made from?
As mentioned before, steel was the go to for designing cups back in the day but as technology has moved forward, so has cup protection and over time, from the days of cold steel cups, which weren’t pleasant, we replaced them with carbon fibre cups, which were more comfortable and offered more protection.
Today’s modern carbon fibre cups were a huge success. Known for it’s strong, durable qualities, carbon fibre is known for absorbing and dissipating impact shocks at a microscopic level. When a carbon fibre cup is struck, small vibrations will go through the fibre, which carry small pockets of air. These pockets of air absorb the shockwaves, dissipating the energy. Despite all this, the real reason carbon fibre technology became so popular for cups is the fact it’s so lightweight.
Newer cups also started introducing layers of gel and foam around the edge, to help stop chafing and being uncomfortable, especially if you liked to have your jockstrap tight.
Cups are pretty basic but an essential if you want to train MMA or BJJ and we highly suggest that you wear one, just in case the worst happens you are at least protected. If you want to compete in MMA it is better to get used to wearing one while you’re sparring. However it is noted that cups and any groin protection are prohibited at any Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. This is due to the hard cup being used as a painful fulcrum point in any arm bars or joint locks.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Windy Muay Thai Steel Cup Review
The Windy Muay Thai Steel cup is one of the best steel cups on the market today. In this article, I’m going to talk about a very private situation. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. One of the least talked about topics in Combat Sports is groin protection. Normally referred to as a cup. You won’t be allowed to fight in any sanctioned competition without a mouthpiece, and protective cup.
There are several types of cups, from metal Muay Thai cups to MMA compression cups. Boxing only allows one type of groin protection to be used. So, if you’re a boxer, this article may not benefit you much, unless you plan on venturing into other Combat Sports. Traditional Muay Thai cups offer the best protection, but they’re the most primitive design, as well as the most difficult and time-consuming to wear.
If you’re anything like me, then your private parts are very valuable to you. I will ask you a simple question: which would you rather protect your valuables with? Plastic or metal?
Check out our top 5 best MMA cups reviewed here.
My go to cup of choice is the Windy Steel Groin Guard (WSGG). The WSGG is as easy to put on as a pair of underwear, and it delivers more protection than any other cup on the market aside from a traditional Muay Thai cup. It kills two birds with one stone. It saves you the same amount of time as compression shorts cup would, while also providing the protection that only metal can.
There isn’t much to the WSGG. The metal portion is sewn to the waistband, at the top and bottom of the Thai steel cup. It’s incredibly simple in design, and it needs to be, because it’s not the kind of gear that’s built to be seen. It is the kind of gear that is only meant to do a single job, and it does it very well. If it was any prettier than it was; let’s say in came in gold. Then it would be absolutely pointless, because no one is interested in the color of another competitor’s cup.
I’ve used regular Sports Jockstraps before. They weren’t flexible enough for kickboxing purposes, in my opinion. I’ve even used other plastic cups made specifically for Combat Sports of all kinds. And they all cracked on me. Most of the time it only happened during sparring. But one time it even happened to me during a fight, and the fight had to be stopped. It was quite the traumatic experience. They use Metal Alloys to protect precious metals, such as gold in Fort Knox. Why would you want anything less than metal to protect your family jewels?
Unfortunately, I get kicked in the private area far too often. If it wasn’t for this cup, I may not have been able to have kids. I know I’m not the only individual that feels like they get kicked in the groin far more often than normal. Even if I did other sports, I would still wear this cup.
The waistband itself is also extremely durable. I have above-average flexibility as a kickboxer, and I can throw some pretty flashy and extraneous kicks. I’ve also gone up and down in weight significantly since owning this cup. The heaviest I’ve ever weighed myself on the scale was lbs. That was 5 days before the weigh-ins of a title fight, which I had to weigh lbs for. I’m going to assume that I lost 10 lbs or so when I was getting in shape for this specific fight. Before cutting down to lbs, to make the specific weight limit, I also fought as low as at lbs. Through all of those training camps, I have worn the exact same cup. There is also a Velcro connection in the rear side of the waistband, in case you need to adjust for fitting. However, I’ve never had to adjust it since the first time I wore it.
This may sound gross but I’ve had this Windy Muay Thai Steel Cup since That’s almost 6 years at the time of this writing. It’s not the most lucrative expense that I’ve ever had to make, of course. But I honestly can’t think of anything else that I’ve ever bought in my life, that brought me as much utility as this cup. I’ve used and abused this cup for 6 years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I got another 6 years out of it. In fact, if I ever end up headlining a pay-per-view card in my future, I hope I’m wearing the same exact Thai Steel Cup.
The Windy Steel Groin Guard is the physical manifestation of Life Insurance. It would be an understatement to call it a purchase, or even an investment. It's a piece of equipment that's almost as important to Combat Sports as the actual exercises themselves. If there's anything in life that I will give a perfect score to, it would be the Windy Metal Cup. At this point in time, I honestly can't imagine a cup being better than this.
- Incredibly Long-Lasting and Durable

The Best Cups for MMA, Muay Thai and Boxing in
A good groin cup for MMA, Muay Thai, or boxing should be capable of wholly encompassing the groin area and must not be bulky to the extent of hindering movement.
Here are my top picks for best cups for combat sports.
The Diamond MMA Athletic Cup is the perfect choice for professional martial artists and anyone training MMA and Muay Thai as a side sport. The cup should ideally be used together with the compression shorts or the jockstrap.
The cup features a polycarbonate core, the same material used in bulletproof glasses. It can withstand as much as a pound sledge-hammer repeatedly hammered without breaking. Not many of its competitors can resist more than a single blow. It was designed to withstand repeated impacts around the groin.
Furthermore, this cup provides flexibility around its edges to ensure that you don’t get hurt when you grapple. Medical professionals attest to the Diamond MMA cups durability and quality, and it is also endorsed by MMA and UFC athletes.Check Price

The Venum Challenger Groin Guard features a tough double-layer shock absorber to offer top-notch protection against kicks to the groin. It also has a rubber gel shield to reduce the effects of sudden impacts from kicks while ensuring high flexibility and comfort. The product is designed anatomically such that it fits perfectly on the athletes body shape and allows free movement during sparring. It also comes with a Dry-Tech supporter cup to enhance gross ventilation and easy elimination of sweat.
One main thing that people notice first about this protector is its minimal design. Instead of the regular straps on the hips and buttocks, it has only a waistband, two straps, and sleeves for the jockstrap. Although the groin guards have a limited number of designs, the quality is top-notch and offers a high protection level.

The Lobo (a pun for low-blow) was designed by athletes and got quite a lot of reviews and hypes from several Muay Thai fighters. The cup is a Swedish brand, but its design is inspired by Muay Thai fighters traditional steep cups.
The product is made of plastic, but it is extremely hard. Like Thai cups, getting it to fit initially might be challenging, but once you get used to wearing it, you’ll find that it’s very comfortable. Its thin elastic straps and waistbands provide the needed security for the athlete, although some bigger athletes have complained about the straps being too tight.
Lo-bloo Thai cups have ventilation holes to keep the groin region cool. The patented fitting system gives complete protection and mobility. It is easily washable; you can clean it in a washing machine or rinse it under running water.

This product from Shock Doctor comes with a jockstrap option with an ultra pro-carbon flex cup. The ultra pro-carbon flex cup is a rubber cup with extra carbon fiber material. The product comes with an ultra-comfort micro-knit rubber waistband to offer maximum comfort for the athlete.
Its ultra-carbon flex cup provides advanced impact protection by transferring the shock away from the groin area. However, it offers less protection compared to other options on the list.
Asides from the micro-knit waistband, it also has an anti-odor moisture-wicking stretch to wick away moisture from your groin, keeping you dry and cool.
Shock Doctor Ultra Pro cups are very cheap compared to other options, but they are only ideal for light sparring since they offer less protection. So, if your budget is small, this is worth considering.

How to Wear a Cup for MMA, Boxing, or Muay Thai
Diamond MMAs cup is the gold standard in groin protection for combat sports. Heres a tutorial on how to properly fit the cup:
There are two main ways to wear a Diamond MMA cup. You can pair it with a jockstrap or wear it with compression shorts. If youre using a jockstrap, youll need to get the exact one designed with the athletic cup. Ensure that the jockstrap fits your waist perfectly, as a larger size will prevent the cup from being held in place correctly.
Once youve put on the jockstrap and pulled up to the waist, all you need to do is to tuck your genitals into the pouch and secure it at the front of the jockstrap. The pointed end of the cup should face downwards, while the wide part should be placed just below the waistband.
For the second method, you need to get a Diamond MMA compression short, which is already designed to hold the Diamond MMA cup. You only need to wear the shorts as you would any other shorts or underwear; then place the cup the same way you would put it in a jockstrap, completely covering your genitals.
Frequently Asked Questions about
These are some common questions asked when selecting the best cups for MMA, Muay Thai, and boxing.
Q: For How Long Can I Use a Groin Cup?
A: The durability of a groin protector depends mostly on its quality, how often you train with it, and the types of training you do. However, you can be sure that most cups last for years.
Q: Can Cups Be Washed?
A: Of course, most MMA groin protectors can be washed but confirm the specifics on the packaging. If there is no information on how to wear a particular protector, you can generally wash them in hot/warm water.
Q: How Do I Wear a Cup?
A: You can either try one of these two options: you can put it into a slit in your compression shorts or use a jockstrap to hold the cup in. The choice is yours, but we recommend the compression shorts method.
Q: Do I Need More than One Cup?
A: You don’t, except you’re competing, you are not likely to need more than one cup. Even then, we advise that you get the same model you use while sparring for competitions. That way, you don’t experience a different feeling from the one you’re already familiar with.
Final Thoughts on Finding the Best Cups for MMA
A kick to the groin can cause a lot of pain and even damage to vital organs around that region. Therefore, when you’re considering choosing the best groin protector, don’t be wry about spending extra money because I can assure you that you’ll not regret it.
The Diamond Cup is my overall best cup for MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and other close contact sports. It fits perfectly in your groin, making it easy and comfortable for you to move around.Check Price
