Psalms 11 nlt

Psalms 11 nlt DEFAULT
I trust in the LORD for protection. So why do you say to me, “Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety! The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. They shoot from the shadows at those whose hearts are right. The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?” But the LORD is in his holy Temple; the LORD still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth. The LORD examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence. He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked, punishing them with scorching winds. For the righteous LORD loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.

I’m not sure who is talking to David in this passage. I imagine it is nearly everyone who wants to see him alive. Perhaps well-meaning friends, family and colleagues. Regardless, they give what seems like logical advice. “Run! Hide! Save yourself!” It doesn’t seem wrong to say so. In fact, it is probably what I would say too if friends of mine were facing violent persecution; if they were being hunted down to be killed. Even the Bible says to go in Proverbs 22:3 (NIV), “the prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” And yet, in this case, David is saying no. That he’s trusting in God to protect him. It is naivety? Is it stupidity? Is it faith? How do you know? When is it right to stay in a bad situation? When is it right to encourage others to stay? When should you encourage them to go?

This life and death situation is not something we frequently struggle with in the US, or the UK where I currently live. But it is happening all the time all over the world — for believers and missionaries and for many who are neither of those. Is it ever right to say, “just trust in God, He’ll get you through this? Hold tight, He’s going to set everything right in the end?” For that matter, when is the end and will it be set right in our lifetime?

I don’t really have answers to these questions except to say this. I think each situation is different. That to give Godly advice in these situations requires prayer, lots of prayer. In David’s case, he previously hid but not this time. Even in his life, the situation required different action at different times. What is obvious is that he is relying on promises from God and on what he knows of God’s character. David knew God promised he would be king and that would never come to pass if he always ran so he decided this was the time to stay. Perhaps God spoke to him and said stay. Perhaps he felt a confidence in his soul that this was the time to stay. Whatever it was, his decision to stay was in line with what God had previously told Him and who God is.

I suppose that is the thing. Once when I was struggling with a decision where I believed God told me what to do but it was illogical to most around me, my mom advised me, “God is not going to tell me what He told you to do. As long as it is consistent with His Word, if you believe he told you to do something and you don’t do it or if you believe He told you not to do something and you do it, you are sinning” [forgive the paraphrase mom]. Maybe the first response should not be ‘run’ but instead should be, let’s just pray and worship together. Perhaps in those moments, God will speak or God will confirm or perhaps God will just give peace and hope.

Here’s a link to Gungor’s ‘Beautiful Things‘ – because how good it is to know that God makes “beautiful things out of the dust.”

The Refuge of the Upright

111 I trust in the Lord for protection. So why do you say to me, "Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety! 2 The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. They shoot from the shadows at those whose hearts are right. 3 The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?"
