The tailgate is an often overlooked feature of the pickup truck, well until recently, that is. Over the last few years, some genius designers decided to utilize one of the most unique features the pickup truck offers. Once that box was opened, the tailgate bonanza began. The 2021 GMC Sierra decided to let more customers enjoy the new tailgate-features party.

The 2021 GMC Sierra MultiPro Tailgate is coming to nearly every trim level

According to GM Authority, the 2021 GMC Sierra will include the MultiPro Tailgate as a standard feature for every trim level except the base model. The SLE and Elevation trims are the ones newly given the swiss-army tailgate as standard. Even though the entry-level was left out of the new standard feature implementation, customers can now get it as a $595 option.

Previously the only models that got the MultiPro Tailgate as standard were the three highest trims; the SLT, AT4, and Denali. However, it was optional for the Elevation in the Crew-Cab configuration but not available on the SLE or base-model at all.

The only explanation for this increased availability must be that GMC Sierra owners clearly wanted it. When it debuted on the 2019 Sierra, GMC described it as “the segment’s most innovative tailgate ever.” A pretty strong claim, but seeing as the tailgate game almost only consisted of a metal slab with a handle and two hinges, that isn’t the most difficult accomplishment.

This new tailgate featured six different configurable options, and of those six, only two had been seen before. The MultiPro lived up to its name by offering a standing workstation, a step entry, and egress mode that, with the assist handle, offers both step and seated functionality, enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, and easier access to items in the box. 

In an interview with GM Authority, Roger Olle of GM engineering says that the design came from a “Shark-Tank-style idea pool…” Olle goes on to say, “We were tasked by our chief engineers to come up with an innovative way to address a customer need. Based on the clinics that we ran, we knew that the customer wanted help getting in and out of the vehicle more easily.”

Unlike the tailgates of yore, the MultiPro will be electrified and programmed based on buttons. No more pulling the handle and letting that thing slam down. Like the Chevy Silverado, the GMC Sierra will have a touchpad that allows you to select which configuration you want. This same system will be used on the Hummer EVs tailgate. 

Although this new tailgate being standard equipment will likely drive some sales and please the customer base, it isn’t coming for free. I’m sorry to say, the new standard equipment is coming with a bit of a price bump, according to Motor1. The prices will vary depending on trim level, but even the base-model is increasing. 

These innovations are undoubtedly useful and practical, but these things make the average price of pickups jump to numbers that are hard for many people to afford. Trucks sure have changed.

    A Unicorn? The cheapest GMC Sierra 2500 with a MultiPro tailgate

    Finding a cheap work truck takes, well, work these days — especially when you start looking for a specific feature like a MultiPro tailgate, which is a smart addition to any truck. Don’t despair; we did the hard digging to find the cheapest GMC Sierra 2500 with the MultiPro tailgate.

    It does exist in a base model truck, but it might be harder to find than a leprechaun hiding with a pot of gold. Here’s why.

    Why does your work truck need a MultiPro?

    Before we begin, let’s examine what the MultiPro tailgate is and why you might want it in a base model truck.

    While it may seem expensive to option a base truck with the MultiPro tailgate, it does make for an excellent solution for work trucks and fleets.

    With the multiple load stops on the tailgate, this gives companies confidence that their employees can haul oversize material to a jobsite with superior load securement. Fleets can also benefit from the large tailgate step because they load and unload materials from truck beds often. Although more expensive than many fleet trucks, having a MultiPro tailgate increases its utility substantially.

    The introduction of the GMC MultiPro tailgate helped fuel a battle amongst manufacturers to reinvent traditional tailgates and increase their functionality. GMC advertised its new tailgate as having six distinct functions that would improve bed access, work stations and load securement.

    This unique tailgate first debuted in March of 2018 as a new feature of the redesigned 2019 Sierra 1500 that would launch that fall. The tailgate was optional on Sierra 1500 SLT trim trucks and standard on AT4 and Denali. Though the initial launch was successful, by limiting the sales to the three most luxurious trims, GMC missed out on the work truck market.

    The MultiPro tailgate was added to the redesigned Sierra HD trucks for the 2020 model year. And here’s the kicker, with the Sierra HD, MultiPro is available on all trims – not just the top tier.

    So, what’s the cheapest truck with MultiPro?

    According to GMC’s build and price configurator, the 2020 Sierra 2500 starts at $35,800, without destination fees. The cheapest truck that GMC offers equipped with the MultiPro tailgate is $38,195 before destination ($35,790 with destination and current discounts). For that price, you get a 2500 regular cab, long bed, 6.6-liter gasoline V-8, 2WD Sierra trim.

    On trim levels where the MultiPro tailgate is not standard equipment, GMC’s online price configurator lists the tailgate as a $445 option. Not bad considering the Ram multifunction tailgate retails for $995. This, however, is not the true cost of the MultiPro tailgate on the regular cab 2500 because in order to select this option, you also have to add the $1,950 Convenience Package. This package includes some of the popular options that come standard on higher trim level trucks such as power windows and locks, cruise control and remote keyless entry.

    Why is this truck a unicorn?

    Although you could order this configuration of truck from any GMC dealership, it is not a truck you will commonly find on dealer lots. Dealers tend to stock their inventory with more popular – and more profitable – extended and crew cab trucks. Also, the regular cab trucks they do stock are often not equipped with options such as the MultiPro tailgate, keeping the price low to appeal to fleet buyers.

    It is also worth noting much of GMC’s advertising is directed at higher-trimmed trucks, overlooking the more unique features of the base models. Despite the lower inventory, a regular cab with MultiPro is a unique truck that can serve a variety of purposes.

    When GMC announced the 2021 Sierra by the end of summer last year, the availability of the MultiPro tailgate was announced for all trim levels, except for the base model. This means that the multifunctional feature has become an option for the SLE and Elevation trims but buyers of the entry-level version won't be getting it even at an added premium.

    However, this has changed as discovered by the GM Authority. Looking at the configurator for the 2021 GMC Sierra, the MultiPro tailgate feature is now standard across all trim levels, sans the base Sierra.

    Even better, those who want to get the feature on the most basic trim level will have the option to do so for $595.

    There's a bit of a catch, though. The pricing for the GMC trucks is a little higher for the 2021 model year, which varies per trim level. The base 2021 Sierra with the smallest engine option comes with a standard MSRP of $39,600 – a $400 increase from last year. Going up to SLE has a starting MSRP of $47,000, reflecting a $3,300 price increase, while the Elevation trim shows a $2,600 price hike at a starting MSRP of $48,800. 

    The three upper trim levels get smaller price hikes for the 2021 model year, reflecting $400, $600, and $500 increases for the SLT, AT4, and Denali variants, respectively. Of note, all the prices mentioned here are for the 4x4 Crew Cab, Short Box configuration without destination charges.

    While this new pricing doesn't sound good for probable Sierra buyers, especially those opting for the lower variants, GMC is showing massive discounts and cash allowances as of this writing, which vary per trim level.
