Why Does My Laptop Say That There Is a Problem With My Cooling System?

By Jane Williams

A problem with your cooling system indicates that it is in danger of overheating.

As you use your laptop and go about your business, a sudden message declaring a problem with your cooling system could put a quick and sudden end to your work. This message usually appears when your laptop's fan isn't working properly, leaving your machine vulnerable to overheating. In most cases, your laptop shuts down shortly after alerting you to your cooling problem, effectively putting an end to your ability to keep using it.

The Dangers of Overheating

Heat is a dangerous enemy to computers, and your laptop's slim design and tightly packed components make it especially vulnerable to overheating. Every component inside your machine generates heat during operation, and if not properly vented, this heat can build and cause damage. The delicate transistors and computer electronics can warp under extreme temperatures, causing operational problems and even physical damage. If left unattended, an overheating laptop can completely fail, rendering it dead and unusable.

Fan Failure

One of the most common causes of the “cooling system” message is a malfunctioning cooling fan. Your laptop fan could stop working if it becomes too clogged with dust, or suffers damage from an accidental drop. If you receive the message shortly after your laptop received a nasty spill, the fan may require replacement. Collected dirt, dust and lint inside your machine can essentially choke your fan to death. Use some canned air to blow dust out through the air vents. If you're comfortable with taking your machine apart, you can give your internal components a more thorough cleaning.

Dried Thermal Paste

Slathered between your heat sink -- the cooling fan that sits atop your CPU -- and your processor is a layer of thermal paste, which helps whisk away the chip's heat. If this paste dries up, your laptop can overheat, even if your fan still works perfectly. You can replace this paste yourself by taking your laptop apart, wiping the dried paste off with some rubbing alcohol and reapplying a new layer. Fresh paste and a good cleaning while you're in your machine can help keep it running cool.

A Helping Hand

Sometimes even a working fan, fresh thermal paste and a clean interior won't help keep your laptop cool. To help encourage a cool system, keep all of the air vents unblocked to allow proper airflow. Add a cooling pad -- a stand with additional fans -- to help whisk away more heat and keep your laptop running and functioning properly.

The world has gone mobile. Whether you’re looking at website traffic, tech sales data, or even just the table at your local college, the evidence is there. Laptops are more compact, easier to use, and generally just as powerful as their desktop counterparts. But there is one area where laptops don’t perform as well – heat dissipation.

When it comes to computer components, heat is their kryptonite. If they get too hot, your hardware has to slow them down to prevent damage. Laptop manufacturers have some pretty advanced cooling technology found inside their computers, but it’s not perfect.

notebook cooling exhaust fan

There are two main reasons why our computers don’t stay as cool as we’d like them to be. The first is space. There is only so much space inside a laptop case, so the fans are usually as small as possible. The second is sound. Everyone wants a quiet laptop, so manufacturers constantly sacrifice airflow for silence.

Laptop cooling pads have been on the market for quite some time, but they’re not the best you can get. Vacuum cooling fans work on a unique principal. By attaching to the air outlet, they are able to suck air through at a higher velocity than your stock cooling system. Some of these systems have boosted cooling performance by a significant margin. Is the difference noticeable to most consumers? How do you know if you would benefit from one? We decided to find out for ourselves.

Opolar

Having been in this industry for several years, Opolar has produced several iterations of their laptop vacuum cooler. Historically speaking, they’ve often been one of the leading brands on the market. With their 6th generation cooler now available, we were curious to see how it improved from the previous model.

Opolar LC06

Fit

The most important thing with any cooling system is that the fan be firmly attached to the laptop. You want it to draw air exclusively through the vent, and not just from the area around the laptop. This is where the Opolar really stands out. There are three different models, each with a slightly different thickness. You can choose from 0.75 inches, 0.875 inches, and 1 inch. This width should be matched with the thickness of your laptop. Extending from the side of the cooler is a large rubber sleeve that can be clamped onto the side of your laptop. When attached, it creates a perfect seal around the cooling port of your computer. This maximizes airflow, putting it ahead of many other vacuum coolers.

Opolar LC06

Another important thing about this clamping mechanism is that it is solid. You don’t have to have your laptop resting on a desk, you can lift it up and carry it around wherever you like. The rock-solid clamps allow it to follow along with you.

Opolar LC06

Air Flow

The only reason you would ever buy a vacuum cooler is because the fan inside is better than the one in your laptop. One of the main reasons we picked the LC06 is the fan itself. Manufactured in Japan, the bearings are built to a much higher standard than most. This means less noise, and long term reliability. It’s rated for over 5000 hours of use, allowing it to last much longer than most laptops themselves.

But the most impressive part of this fan is the variable airflow. You can choose from 13 different speed settings, allowing you to find the perfect balance between sound level and air flow.

The exact numbers will vary from one laptop to another, but this fan is definitely several times better than the one in our laptop. Most users won’t need to turn it up above 50%.

Opolar LC06

Cooling

How does it actually perform in the real world? We tried it on the largest laptop we had, a Dell M6600 with a i7 processor. This is a desktop replacement notebook, so it produces much more heat than your common laptop. Under load, we were sitting at 71 degrees with the stock cooler. One we slapped on this cooler, the temperatures dropped to 65 degrees. This temperature change can mean the difference between throttling and full clock speed, so this was a pretty impressive result.

Usability

Although keeping our computers cool is important, the last thing that any of us want is a fan so loud that we can’t hold a conversation. Anyone who’s worked in a server room before understands what we’re talking about. Fortunately, the Japanese fan is quite quiet. At max speed, it only produces 70dbm, not much more than your typical house fan. But for most users, the noise level will be much lower since you’ll be running it on a slower speed.

Opolar LC06

On the side of the cooler, there is a bright LED temperature display. This shows the heat of the air leaving your computer. It’s important to remember that this air will be cooler than your actual CPU temperature. When our CPU was at 60 degrees, the air was closer to 40. But once you get a feel for the temperature drop, you can quickly decide if you need to increase or decrease the fan speed.

KLIM (Innovative Cooling Design) Gaming Laptop Cooler

As an importer that sources their products from all around the world, KLIM knows how to take something good, and make it great. Their gaming laptop cooler is similar in design to the Opolar mode, but there are a few unique features that make it ideal for gaming laptops.

KLIM Innovative Cooling Design Gaming Laptop Cooler

Fit

It’s been proven that the sleeve style mount is the most effective on the market. What’s unique about the KLIM Gaming Laptop Cooler is that the sleeves are independent from the cooler itself. When you pick one up, you get a set of all three sleeves at once. You won’t have to measure your laptop, just test fit each sleeve and see what fits best.

KLIM Innovative Cooling Design Gaming Laptop Cooler

KLIM’s cooler is ideal for stationary laptops. Instead of using a clip-on bracket, it uses an included strip of 3M mounting tape to attach to the bottom of your laptop. The sleeve then fits over the port on the cooler, allowing it to clip into place.

The sleeve will stay on your computer at all times, but the cooler can be removed when you’re in portable mode. This design gives slightly better cooling performance, as fans always work better while on a flat surface.

KLIM Innovative Cooling Design Gaming Laptop Cooler

Air Flow

The fan on this laptop is a little more standardized, but much more adaptable. It’s a variable speed can capable of speeds from 1500 rpm, all the way up to 4200 rpm. This can be dynamically adjusted on a linear scale, to about a 10% accuracy. The hotter your computer gets, the faster the fan pulls air through the cooler.

KLIM Innovative Cooling Design Gaming Laptop Cooler

Cooling

As we expected, this cooler was one of the best performers we’ve tested. Some of this could be due to using it on a desk, since that is how it’s designed to be used. The same Dell M6600 dropped from 71 degrees down to 62. The one thing we noticed was that the hotter your computer gets, the better the fan works. This makes it ideal for anyone who is going to be asking a lot out of their computer. Gamers, video editors, and professionals who need the best performance possible should definitely consider this model.

Usability

For most users, this is going to be a “set it and forget it” system. Just plug in the cooler, hit the power button, and let it automatically adjust the fan speed as needed. If you like to get into the nuts and bolts of things, you can set the speed manually. There are also several different modes you can choose from. One option reduces the noise, keeping everything quiet. Others keep the laptop as cool as possible, regardless of the environment.

UnTech (Portable) Gaming Laptop Cooler

Not everyone is running a massive gaming powerhouse on their lap. Some of us are just looking for a simple way to keep our laptops cool. This is where UnTech comes in. Although this cooler uses the same technology as others, it’s been simplified to focus on ease of use over performance.

UnTech Gaming Portable Laptop Cooler

Fit

On the UnTech (Portable) Gaming Laptop Cooler, sleeve is identical to the ones we’ve seen on the previous laptop cooler, although there is an extra size included. The slim sleeve is designed specifically for ultra-portable notebooks, like the Macbook.

UnTech Gaming Portable Laptop Cooler

Air Flow

Inside of this cooler is a 75mm fan, which is a little larger than you’ll find inside most laptops. It puts out a pretty consistent 75 CFM, a noticeable improvement over most laptops. The grills are evenly spaced out, so there is lots of room for the air to travel through. This reduced restriction path allows a smaller fan to push air more easily, making efficient use of the airflow path.

UnTech Gaming Portable Laptop Cooler

Cooling

Considering the compact size of this fan, we were impressed to see that it dropped our CPU temp on our huge laptop by a surprising 6 degrees! This is under full load, in an environment that this fan isn’t really designed to be used for. Just for comparison purposes, we decided to plug it in and let our laptop idle. When the external cooler is running slow, it’s almost silent. You can barely hear a thing. We can’t say the same for our built-in fan. This cooler will excel in an environment where you’ve got a more compact laptop, and the included fans just won’t cut it. It will give your system the extra boost it needs to really perform.

Usability

This cooler has a built-in temperature sensor, and an automatic speed control. There is nothing that you need to set or configure. Just attach it to your computer, plug it into the USB port, and let it do its work. Where simplicity is concerned, you won’t find anything better.

Which Laptop Vacuum Cooling Fan is Right for Me?

There are two factors to think about when selecting a cooling fan. You need to know what kind of laptop you have, and how you intend to use that laptop. Is it a large desktop replacement model? Or a compact one you take with you? Will you be using it on a desk, or on your lap?

If you want a cooling fan that you can use with a laptop while you’re away from the desk, the Opolar is the cooler for you. It has a rigid clip that physically attaches to the laptop, so you don’t have to leave it stationary on a desk. It’s adaptable, so it can fit almost any size of laptop. And the built-in controls let you choose from a number of different settings, keeping your laptop running the way you want it to.

If you want the best cooling possible on a stationary laptop, the KLIM (Innovative Cooling Design) Gaming Laptop Cooler has everything you need. Designed specifically for gamers and workstation users, this cooler makes no compromises, even when put in challenging situations.

Value simplicity? The UnTech (Portable) Gaming Laptop Cooler is as easy as it gets. Just attach it to the cooling port, plug it in, and let it do it’s magic. This cooler is the only model suitable for ultra-portable, although it can still be used with larger laptops as well.

Cooling Pads/Cooling Stands

Buy Cooling Pads/Cooling Stands Online at Flipkart.com

Today, as we are gradually embracing a mobile lifestyle, switching to laptops and notebooks from desktops is becoming the norm. Although laptops are enabling, they are also prone to many cons. Intensive gaming or extensive use of your laptop for a long duration can cause it to overheat, which leads to decreased performance and potential damage. This is when cooling pads and stands come in handy. They reduce the risk of overheating by artificially increasing the airflow to your laptop internal components.

Cooling pad or stand, what’s the difference?

Many people think a cooling pad is synonymous to a cooling stand, but in reality there is a big difference between both. A laptop stand is something that you put on top of your desk, whereas you can put a pad on your lap while using your laptop. You can also find cooling stands online that can double up into cooling pads when the need arises.

What to consider before buying cooling stands and pads?

There are various factors you should consider before buying pads or stands for your laptops including size, portability, material, functionality and price. For a cooling pad to be portable it should be made of sturdy and lightweight materials. You should also consider the size; it should fit inside your bag easily. Many of these devices can be connected to your laptop via USB, so you don’t need to free up space in your surge protector to plug them separately.

When you buy a laptop stand, look for the ones that allow for height adjustment and can be tilted to bring your laptop screen closer. Many of these stands are equipped with air vents that keep the air flowing below the laptop to keep it cool. You should also go for the stands that include cable organizers to keep the wires neatly tucked away. Foldable stands are great if you have space constraints. These can be easily folded and tucked into a corner when not in use.

Where to buy laptop cooling pads and stands from?

Looking for the perfect cooling stand or pad is nothing short of a Tolkien-style quest, where the object of your desire can be very elusive. Online shopping sites have made this quest easier these days. From buying tips to an extensive catalogue of products at discounted rates, these e-commerce platforms help you make an informed decision before you buy your favourite product. They also let you compare the prices provide you with reviews from actual buyers. The payment methods are perhaps put the cherry on the top. They are hassle-free and trustworthy. Moreover, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your couch or bed to shop for these amazingly utilitarian products.

Computer Cooling Pads For The Safety Of Your System

Long hours of running your computer/laptop can result in overheating. The external temperature, the activity that is running and most importantly, the type of processor used in the computer plays a part in deciding whether you need to buy computer cooling pads.

Best Laptop Cooling Pad 2021: Laptop Coolers For Your Desk and Lap

A laptop's portability is one of its greatest assets, but with the compact form factor come some trade-offs. The cooling in laptops is generally not as robust as desktop PCs, unless you've got a beefy gaming laptop, and the tight confines inside a laptop don't take as much dust and hair getting before performance can really start to decline. A laptop cooling pad is a helpful way to handle a device that's getting uncomfortably warm.

In general, laptop cooling pads will help ensure your device gets good airflow. Throwing your laptop onto a pillow or blanket can smother its air intakes, but a laptop cooling pad won't. Many also include fans to blow additional air through your laptop, which can aid in cooling the internals and chassis. That extra cooling can also help keep your laptop more comfortable to the touch. These pads can be especially handy for keeping your legs comfortable, as they act as a buffer between your warm laptop and your skin.

TL;DR – These are the Best Laptop Cooling Pads:

1. Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB

Best Laptop Cooling Pad

Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB
Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB

Fans: 1 x 200mm ● Size: 18.54” x 13.96” x 1.83"

Your laptop likely has some little fans inside spinning as fast as they can to keep your system cool. And that’s assuming it’s not passively cooled, in which case there would be no fans at all. There’s not much you can do to increase that cooling potential for your laptop on its own, but the Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB offers a way to push a bunch of that hot air away from your laptop so it can stay cooler while it works and so your lap can stay cooler as well.

The Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB delivers its cooling with a mesh top and a single 200mm fan. That may not sound like much compared to coolers that pack in a ton of small fans, but a big fan has the advantage of moving plenty of air while spinning slower to keep extra silent. Thermaltake also lets you adjust the speed of the fan in case you want to keep it as quiet as possible or go for max cooling. As the name suggests, this cooling pad also comes with a stylish taste of RGB lighting all around the edge of the pad.

Fans: 2 ● Size: 16.5" x 10" x 18.9"

A lot of cooling pads will do a great job if your aim is to use your laptop on your lap or low on a desk. Sometimes that's not what you're after though, and that's where the Miggoing laptop table comes in. This stand has adjustable legs with several long segments, allowing you to keep the stand low or raise it up to 18.9 inches high.

The stand can serve just as well for use on couches, in bed, or at a desk. There's even a removable mousepad attachment. And, of course, it wouldn't be much of a laptop cooling stand if it wasn't doing some cooling. In the laptop tray, there are two cooling fans to help keep cool air blowing past your computer.

Got a hot laptop? Combat rising temps with these laptop coolers

Included in this guide:

The best laptop cooling pads will do wonders for your device’s performance. It doesn’t matter if your laptop gets too hot when gaming or you like to use it on the couch where it doesn’t get proper ventilation. Either way, you’ll get improved performance and possibly better battery life by using a cooling pad. Not to mention, your portable might also be more comfortable to work on.

Investing in a laptop cooling pad, whether you’re looking for something for your lap or for the desk, is more vital than ever. No matter how much engineering goes into thin and light laptops to keep heat at bay, thermal throttling and other heat related issues still happen. They’re especially common on kitted out laptops with powerful components like Nvidia’s Ampere GPUs. Gamers, content creators, and anyone pushing their laptops will need one of these as part of their setup.

You’ll appreciate the extra thermal cooling from a laptop cooling pad’s fans and metal chassis, especially if you tend to run more intensive programs, whether they be the best PC games or video editing software. Let us help you find one that’s ideal for your needs. Whatever you need one of these pads for, you’ll find something on our list below.

The best laptop cooling pads of 2021

1. Kootek Cooler Pad Chill Mat 5

Best overall laptop cooling pad

Specifications

Fans: 4 x 70mm, 1 x 120mm

Size of pad: 380 x 300 x 35mm

Reasons to buy

+Impressive level of cooling+Can select which fans are switched on

Reasons to avoid

-Not the most robust build

Kootek makes a highly impressive laptop cooling pad which uses five fans (the one in the middle is a bigger 120mm model, surrounded by 70mm fans) to deliver an impressive amount of cooling – while still remaining quiet to boot.

The Chill Mat scores strongly in the versatility stakes as you can switch some of the fans off (it’s possible to have one working, four, or all five), plus it can be raised (using a ratchet mechanism, like a deckchair) through six different height settings depending on your preference (you might want to crank it right up when watching a movie, for example).

This cooling pad can take 12-inch to 17-inch laptops, so all common sizes, with a pair of stoppers at the front to prevent the notebook from sliding off. It also boasts a USB hub with two USB 2.0 ports.

In short, this is a high quality cooling pad with flexibility in spades, and it benefits from a reasonable mid-range price tag, making it our top pick for an all-rounder that covers everything without doing too much damage to your wallet.

2. Cooler Master Notepal XL

Best quiet and powerful laptop cooling pad

Specifications

Fans: 1 x 230mm

Size of pad: 305 x 379 x 47mm

Reasons to buy

+Powerful yet quiet cooling+Angled ergonomic design

Reasons to avoid

-Not as versatile as some rivals

Cooler Master knows cool, you would hope, and the firm’s Notepal is a winner in our books. Using a single large 230mm fan – which is impressively quiet, we might add – it has a fan speed controller, and is designed to pipe ‘optimal airflow’ through your laptop. Indeed, it shifts an impressive amount of air, being rated at 89.8 cubic feet per minute; a very effective level of cooling.

This device also benefits from a slightly tilted ergonomic design, aiming to give you the best angle to use your notebook’s keyboard, along with nonslip feet for stability when placed on a surface. As an added bonus, there are three USB ports around the back.

The Notepal XL is capable of holding laptops up to 17-inches in size, and to cap things off, it’s reasonably priced for the cooling performance you’re getting here. This product is a very close second to the Kootek, but just loses out on the versatility front. If you can’t find the Kootek outside of the US – in some regions stock seems very thin on the ground – then this is a great alternative for powerful cooling.

3. Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB

Best laptop cooling pad for large notebooks

Specifications

Fans: 1 x 200mm

Size of pad: 471 x 354.5 x 46.5mm

Reasons to buy

+Big 200mm fan cools nicely+Nifty RGB lighting

Reasons to avoid

-A pricier option

If you need a cooling pad suitable for a hefty notebook, then this Thermaltake product can cope with a massive laptop as the name suggests – it won’t break a sweat with a 17-inch portable, and is even capable of playing host to larger 19-inch gaming laptops.

It has one 200mm fan for cooling (the fan speed is adjustable), and there are three different height settings (up to an angle of 13-degrees). The large fan provides efficient cooling for bigger laptops, plus you also get RGB lighting around the edges of the pad with various different modes (pulsing, blinking, or just static lighting of different colors).

It’s fashioned from plastic and the build quality perhaps isn’t the best you’ll encounter in the cooling pad world, but it’s plenty sturdy enough to do the job of supporting a hefty gaming laptop. Note that the price tag is reasonably hefty here, too.

4. Enermax TwisterOdio 16

Best laptop cooling pad with built-in speakers

Fans: 1 x 120mm

Size of pad: 352 x 270 x 52mm
