These 9 Virtual Or ‘driveby’ Graduation Party Ideas Are

1. Plan a little watch party for your son or daughter to enjoy the Facebook graduation. Facebook is celebrating the class of 2020 with a whole week of graduation features, and a commencement program.
2. Buy your grad a custom stole. Here’s a cute Etsy shop that will make one for you! If you browse Amazon, you can find entire graduation outfits, as well.
3. Tune in for the LeBron James special -- make it a family event! “Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020,” will air Saturday.
4. Check out -- and get involved! -- in this fun group inspired by the Dr. Seuss classic. Everyone knows the book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” , right? Now there’s a Facebook group by the same name, established to share people’s stories and experiences of the year, and celebrate graduation.
5. Get a customized yard sign or banner. Did you have any idea there were so many options in this department? Just start Googling and you’ll be floored by all your choices.
6. Host a drive-by celebration. OK, your grad might roll his or her eyes at this idea, but we love the thought of getting your teen in some sort of graduation outfit (maybe that stole you just ordered?)
7. And if you’re going to host a drive-able event ... Leave out some favors! Again, you’ll have to figure out how to do this in a “socially distanced” way to be truly safe -- but it’s kind of like picking up groceries or take-out food from a restaurant: your guests will grab their goody bags, come home, throw away the packaging and wash their hands.
8. Treat your grad to a special at-home celebration. Just because you can’t physically go to as many places (like restaurants!) doesn’t mean you can’t still roll out the red carpet.
9. How about a video scrapbook? Since all your pictures are digital these days anyway, it would probably be easy enough to set up a video or virtual scrapbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some fun ideas for a graduation party?

Throw a graduation party that’s less formal and more fun. Host it outdoors and instead of tables, set out picnic blankets on the ground. On each blanket add a picnic basket filled with everything you need to feed the group that gathers there.

What is a graduation celebration?

Often referred to as “Graduation”, the Commencement ceremony is just that, a ceremony. It is an end-of-spring semester celebration for students projected to successfully complete all of their graduation requirements by the end of that Spring or Summer semester.

What is a graduation party?

A graduation party is a day that celebrates a pivotal moment in your life. It’s also a day you want your child to remember. From the invites to the decorations to the food, a lot of planning and preparation goes into the perfect graduation party, and it can be overwhelming if not organized.

Here's How To Have An Amazing Kindergarten Graduation Celebration In Quarantine

When you stop and think about everything that your child might be losing out on because of the pandemic (end-of-year parties, time with friends), well, it’s enough to make you want to cry. Break out a big box of Kleenex, though, because if you have a kid who's about to go into first grade, you’re probably going to miss out on a kindergarten graduation, too. But just because school is closed doesn’t mean that your kiddo can’t have a grad party. These kindergarten graduation celebration ideas for quarantine will help to mark the end of your little one's milestone year even if they can't be with their classmates.

Of all the years of schooling that your child will have, it’s their time spent in kindergarten that seems to be the most transformative. After all, there are so many firsts when it comes to that full year of school, whether it’s learning how to really read and write or socialize with other kids and make their first real friends. That’s why celebrating your child’s kindergarten graduation is so important, not just for them, but for the entire family. “The kindergarten experience forms a child’s opinion of school, and if they have a positive one, it can affect their attitude towards school for the rest of their career,” Elizabeth Tyrrell MS, an elementary school teacher in New York City, tells Romper. “That’s what makes it such an important milestone that needs to be commemorated.”

Diane Dooley, an elementary school teacher in New Fairfield, CT, agrees. "Kindergarten is a year of tremendous growth!" she tells Romper. "It is certainly worth spending time reflecting and celebrating all that was achieved."

If you’re looking for a way to honor your little learner for all that they’ve accomplished during the school year, read on.

We only include products that have been independently selected by Romper's editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

1

Craft A Cap Together

If you’re looking for a cute (and woot, quick!) graduation craft, create a graduation cap for your kid. “Having your child make the hat with you involves them in the process,” says Tyrrell. “You can continue the conversation by asking what their favorite parts of the school year were as well.” Check out the easy-to-follow instructions for making a paper cap at Free Kids Crafts.

2

Get Dressed

Sure, it’s probably been a few weeks since you’ve worn real pants. But your kiddo’s kindergarten graduation is a perfect time to peel off the pajamas and look fabulous for the photos. You should definitely get your child dressed up in a snazzy suit or a darling dress (like the one above from Boden) so that they feel like an elementary school superstar.

3

Have A Party

Just because you’re practicing social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t party. Although it might be restricted to just the immediate family, put on a party for your little kindergarten graduation. You can set up some games and blast some music for a fun dance off.

4

Get Some Goodies

Your child is going to need a cake to commemorate their commencement. Of course, you can visit your local bakery and order a cake, but another option is Sam’s Club, which is offering small grad cakes for less than 10 bucks, and can be decorated with your kid’s school colors, a personalized message, or your child’s photo. (Pricing varies based on cake size and décor, and are only available for order from your local Sam's Club bakery.) At a time when things might seem bittersweet, it’ll be nice to have something sweet to sink your teeth into.

5

Get Some Stand-Ins

Let’s say that your child is sad that Grandma can’t be there to celebrate their big day. Instead of staring solemnly at some empty seats, you can always invite some guests over — of the cardboard kind. That’s right, life-sized cardboard cutouts are available at Party City, and while you can get out that looks just like your little graduate, some parents are purchasing graduation seat fillers that look a lot like their favorite relatives. (Or you can even get ones that look like their favorite movie characters — just imagine how thrilling it would be if Buzz and Woody or Anna and Elsa came to their grad party.) Or you can line up your little one’s favorite stuffed toys, because, well, they’re party animals.

6

Do Some Decorating

It doesn’t really take a whole lot to get your home ready for a grad party. Blow up some balloons, hang up some streamers, or even decorate your door to let everyone in the neighborhood know that you are the proud parent of a graduate. You can even have a lawn sign printed with a pic of your kid that reads: “Congradulations, graduate.”

7

Organize A Grad Drive By Parade

Drive-by birthday parades have become all the rage during the pandemic. So show your little grad how proud you are of them by organizing a drive-by graduation parade. You can have friends and family drive by at a certain time when you’ll be outside so they can honk, wave, and hold up signs for the newly minted first-grader.

8

Order In Food

Give your kitchen a break on graduation day and order in some food for the festivities. Make sure that the menu boasts all of your child’s favorite finger foods (which means you’ll most likely be hitting up the drive thru at a fast food joint). As for the adults who are so, so tired of eating chicken nuggets and fries every day during homeschooling, elevate their entrees by ordering food from your local restaurants. Not only do you not have to cook, but you’ll be helping the struggling restaurants in your community as they stage their comeback, which is a total win-win for everyone.

9

Plan For The Future

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to how the summer will go. So give your little graduate something to look forward to by making plans for the future. You can talk about a possible family getaway sometime down the road that honors all of your child’s efforts in school. Or it might be something as simple as planning a day that delivers on all the things your child loves, like going to their favorite ice cream shop and a toy store.

10

Create A Memory Book

You can even take it one step further and create a memory book from their kindergarten year, including the activities you did with them as part of their homeschooling. "You can include things like favorite subjects, books, and activities at school," says Mrs. Dooley. If you want your keepsake to have professional-level production value, 4ever Bound takes your pictures and letters and binds them in beautiful books (choose the size, color, and personalization).

11

Celebrate Their Successes

When it comes to kindergarten, your child’s success isn't just a reflection of their hard work — it's a reflection of your efforts, too. Whether it was teaching your child how to differentiate between the sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm line or understand how to add two numbers together, you were an integral part of their academic accomplishments — and that’s truer now than ever.

So take some time during the COVID-19 craziness to recognize how much your kiddo has learned in the last year. Although the pandemic can feel depressing at times, you should make an effort to celebrate your favorite 5 year-old star pupil. Not only does it recognize how far your kiddo has come, but really, your entire family as well. And that’s certainly cause for celebration.

Whether your child is a high school senior or moving on from preschool or kindergarten, graduation is a major milestone. But with schools in Connecticut closed for the rest of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the big day will now likely be celebrated at home.

Kids of all ages may struggle with disappointment over canceled plans. To support them, check out our pediatric psychologists’ advice for helping young people cope with stress.

As for finding a way to properly celebrate your graduate during social distancing – here are ideas:

  • Adopt a senior: Make sure graduates in your town feel extra special by organizing an Adopt-a-Senior event! Residents can choose a graduate to shower with notes of appreciation, flowers and small gifts.
  • Create a virtual “kudos board”: This is a great idea for graduates of all ages. Create an online “group card” filled with messages, GIFs, videos and photos. Kudoboard.com is a popular website just for this purpose, or you can create a shared virtual document another way – Trello, Google Drive, Slack, Zoho, Microsoft OneNote or something else. Whatever platform you use, invite family, friends, teachers and others to write special messages, share fond memories and celebrate your graduate.
  • Organize a photo shoot: Get together with friends to hire a professional photographer and organize a socially distant photo shoot for graduates in their caps and gowns. If your school district is not providing the graduation gear, you can order it online or be creative and make your own!

High school graduate wearing white cap and gown.

  • Organize a car parade: On what should have been their graduation day, have your child and their friends decorate cars and slowly drive around the neighborhood honking and celebrating. Or invite friends and family to drive (and honk!) by your house in honor of your graduate.
  • Decorate your front door with photos: Create a large collage of photos of your graduate through the years, and use it to wallpaper the front door of your house. If a full-door collage is a bit too ambitious, try displaying a smaller photo frame, a photo wreath or even a balloon arc.
  • Collect achievements: Put together a scrapbook of your graduate’s top achievements over the years.
  • Display a yard sign: Your school district may coordinate a yard sign distribution for graduates; if not, you can always search online to order a special sign to honor your graduate.
  • Plan a graduation-themed dinner: Prepare your graduate’s favorite meal and have the whole family dress up for the occasion – with your graduate in full cap and gown attire, of course. Have each family member present your graduate with a “diploma” filled with favorite memories.
  • Bake a cake: This is easy and fun! Bake a cake from scratch with your graduate and decorate it.

Cake with vanilla frosting. Congratulations piped on it. Multi-colored sprinkles all around

  • Create a graduation chair: Decorate your graduate’s chair at the kitchen table to make them feel extra special for a day, a week or even longer.
  • Circulate a graduation announcement: While a party is out of the question, now’s a good time to remind family and friends that your child is about to graduate, in case they want to send a card or gift to mark the occasion.
  • Produce a video: Have friends and family submit short videos full of well wishes for your graduate. Feeling creative? Use a video production app to edit them all together.
  • Organize a virtual party: Bring all of the important people in your child’s life together in a way that follows social distancing! Send a festive invitation with the meeting ID or link. Encourage guests to wear grad-themed attire and prop up decorations in their background. And pick an activity – like speeches, karaoke or recreating the latest TikTok dances – to get everyone engaged. (Need inspiration? Here are 23 ideas for video chat activities.)

Drive-Thru Preschool Graduation

Your little one is getting so big! After a hard year of letters, numbers and making friends — not to mention hand-sanitizing, masks and zoom — preschool graduation has finally arrived, and kindergarten is just around the corner. This year more than any other, the end of pre-k deserves to be celebrated with a great preschool graduation gift.

If you're stumped as to what to buy your little student come preschool graduation, we’ve thought of a few ideas, from cute crafts and on-topic storybooks to educational toys (including STEM toys) and summer must-haves. Why should you trust our picks? Many were recommended by the Good Housekeeping Institute, which tests and vets toys and kids' products to determine stuff your kids will love (that's worth investing in). Other gifts we threw in there because they were personalized, graduation-themed gifts, and preschoolers love nothing more than to see their own names in writing. (The probably learned to spell them this year, too.) No matter which one you choose, these thoughtful ideas will show your kids that you’re proud of them, and that you think they’re ready to go on to the exciting journey that is kindergarten. (Then next year, you can get a kindergarten graduation gift!)

2020 Drive-through Graduation Celebration

Drive-thru preschool graduation gives 4-year-olds their day in the sun

The carpool line at the Child Development Program on Claiborne Avenue looked a bit different Saturday (May 16). Children’s heads popped up through sunroofs as teachers greeted the line of cars with cheers, waves, balloons and gift bags. Preschoolers were being treated to a drive-thru graduation.

Of the 54 total students, ages 6 weeks through 4 years old, at the Uptown center, seven were graduating 4-year-olds.

After being told by several parents that the sudden shelter-in-place orders brought on confusion to many of the children, particularly the older students, CDP staff members determined that they needed to do something to lift the children’s spirits.

“We are more than day-care or a preschool,” said Director Nicole Ben. “We are a family, and families celebrate major milestones — and this is ours.”

With the sounds of “Lean on Me” and “Hello, Goodbye” flowing from large speakers, the children leaned out car windows to grab treat bags, a graduation cap, a memory book of their artwork and classwork and, of course, a diploma.

Pastries and chocolate milk donated by PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans were passed out. Cars pulled into parking places and balloons were distributed.

After brief remarks from Nicole Ben, one of two balloons held by the child was released in honor of the occasion. And as things wrapped up, kids hopped out of cars to run have a photo taken in from the of a banner offering congratulations.

As the cars pulled away, each child carried with them, tucked inside their gift bag, a note from their pre-K teacher Emily Schumacher.

“Way back at the beginning of the school year, we learned our Honeybee Class song and sang about being kind, helping friends, being good listeners, and staying safe. I hope you can remember these big words even when we feel so far apart. I know you are still your kind selves; you can still help friends and family feel loved with phone calls and video chats, you can listen and learn from each other and your parents, you can stay safe and careful until we’re all able to hug each other again.

In this envelope are some wildflower seeds that can grow into something big and strong and lovely, just like you. When they bloom, they will attract bees. I hope that as those bees spread pollen and bring new flowers, you remember the things we sang about and learned together in the Honeybee Class and spread them to the world around you. I know you will do amazing things.”
