"She got a beautiful eye, walk in a line, smile with her type; She knows all about life, never ask why, driving everyone crazy, crazy…" Everyone is surprised that this original song, She, which has so far topped more than 10 million views on China's popular video platform Bilibili was produced by a year-old girl in only 30 minutes.
Zhang Yuxuan, better known as Vicky Xuanxuan on social media, is under the spotlight on Chinese social media for her music and was praised by Chinese netizens as the "young Chinese Taylor Swift."
"I have never thought the song Shewould be so popular," Zhang, a middle school student at the Shenzhen Arts School, majoring in violin, told the Global Times.
"A melody suddenly popped out of my head when I was having a math class. I quickly wrote a few lyrics and melody on my notebook, and after class, I rushed home and took less than half an hour to finish the lyrics and melody," Zhang mentioned adding that she drew inspiration from the movie The Devil Wears Prada.
With its crisp voice and humorous expression, the video of the song She topped Bilibili's recommended list. She has become one of the most popular music bloggers on the platform and also opened her account on YouTube and has attracted 42, followers.
Zhang told the Global Times she fell in love with English songs when she was a primary student. She registered on Bilibili when she was 13 years old and in , she posted her first original song December Composerwhich has been viewed millions of times. "So far, I have produced 26 songs and there are dozens of songs that have not been released," she said.
She also invited Allie Sherlock, a famous Irish teen singer and YouTube celebrity, with million fans, to sing Dance Monkeytogether, which also helped her earn a lot of fans.
After being so popular, Zhang told the Global Times she felt a bit of stressed and she cares more about the quality of her work. "I will check my comments sometimes, mainly the funny ones," Zhang mentioned. She also imitated US singer Madilyn Bailey and wrote a song in a reaction to the people who use verbal aggression on her.
Zhang has received many invitations to music and variety shows but she has refused them due to her young age. She said she still needs to make study her priority and only spends her time off to produce music.
"I like to try all kinds of styles. I tend to put a little emphasis on country and folk styles. I have always wanted to try Chinese songs. My idols are Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and many other good singers," Zhang told the Global Times.
She said her dream is to go to one of the world's top music schools like the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
"I still have a lot to learn including my main subjects like, English skills and composition. I hope I can become a songwriter and work with the musicians I like," she said.
YouTube is facing employee calls to remove a rap song that allegedly encourages violence against Asians, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Rapper YG’s “Meet the Flockers” is a detailed description of a burglary — a relatively common trope in rap music — but it opens with a specific reference to Chinese communities: “find a Chinese neighborhood, cause they don’t believe in bank accounts.” In light of the recent rise in street violence against Asians, a group of YouTube employees argued that message was straightforwardly dangerous, ultimately asking the Trust & Safety team to remove the video.
But YouTube ultimately declined to remove the song, citing the platform’s exception for “educational, documentary, scientific, and artistic” (or EDSA) content.
“While EDSA is not a free pass for any content, there are likely thousands of music videos that would otherwise violate policies were it not for these sorts of EDSA exceptions,” executives wrote in an open letter to employees. “Removing this video would have far-reaching implications for other musical content containing similarly violent or offensive lyrics, in genres ranging from rap to rock.”
It’s not the first time “Meet the Flockers” has generated controversy. Largely ignored on its release in , the song became a point of controversy for Chinese communities two years later after circulating in social media channels, with some police departments even blaming the song and a subsequent unauthorized music video for specific home burglaries. Concern became so heated that San Francisco supervisor Jane Kim called on YouTube to remove the video.
YouTube also declined to take action in response to the controversy, although the uploader later voluntarily removed the music video. The song remains on YouTube through the official YG account, played over a static album cover image.
Reached for comment, YouTube emphasized the importance of open disagreement within its workforce. “YouTube has an open culture and employees are encouraged to to share their views, even when they disagree with a decision,” a representative said. “We’ll continue this dialogue as part of our ongoing work to balance openness with protecting the YouTube community at large.”

Best Selling Chinese Albums of ALL TIME
Chinese Song #1 Tiánmì mì (甜蜜蜜) – Teresa Teng
This was actually one of the first Chinese songs I discovered and it was thanks to KTV (shock).
Karaoke with a mixture of Chinese and foreigners has the capability of bringing out a whole wealth of different tastes.
Where else would you go from Oasis > Xiao Pingguo > Kylie Minogue > Teresa Teng?
Teresa Teng is widely regarded as having one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Chinese music and hearing this song for the first time, the thing that struck me was the togetherness of our Chinese friends. It was almost mesmeric.
The room came together and within 3 or 4 listens I was hooked as well.
Well be bumping into Teresa once again later down the list with her most famous song of all, but this one held a soft spot and grabs our first spot.
Sit back and enjoy
Chinese Song #2 Xiǎo píngguǒ (小苹果) – Chopstick Brothers
From the downright beautiful to the downright bizarre. Thats Chinese music in a nutshell!
Little Apple (小苹果) shot to fame in and never looked back, becoming one of the most popular Chinese songs of the modern era.
Its repetitive (albeit fast) nature, makes the song a really good one to learn Chinese and its also got that irritating toe-tapping ability meaning once you listen to it, its likely to be stuck in your head all day.
Whether thats good or bad is down to you!!
The chopstick brothers (great name by the way) consist of the duo Wang Taili (王太利) and Xiao Yang (肖央). The song was actually originally made for the movie Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon before taking off online and making into KTVs across the country, and further afield.
The video, put together with the song, creates something that is the complete opposite of our first entry, but hey, thats Chinese music for you!
If you like what you hear the song is actually quite easy to learn (the chorus at least) even more so with our video of the pinyin and English!
Check it out and impress your Chinese friends at KTV by belting out this crowdpleaser!
Chinese Song #3 – Dāng (当) Power Station
动力火车 which translates to Power Station are a Taiwanese rock band who came to prominence in
The band consists of Yu Chiu-hsin and Yen Chih-lin and their distinctive looks (namely their long hair, not so common in the 90s in China/Taiwan) and energetic rock ballads helped them shoot to the top.
Four years after forming they released their first album Walking Along Zhongxiao East Road Nine Times.
This particular song actually became famous as it was the theme song to the TV drama My Fair Princess. Always a good way to get your name out there!
Power Station have been lucky enough to win 3 star awards, having been nominated for 4 during the period of and including the aforementioned TV theme title.
Good going 动力火车
Chinese Song #4 – Wǒmen de ài (我们的爱) F.I.R
Another band from Taiwan step up to the plate here. F.I.R are a 3-piece band from Taiwan who jumped onto the scene in
Where does the name F.I.R come from?
Quite simple really. Take the first initial of each band member Faye (lead vocals), Ian (keyboard) and Real (guitar and vocals).
我们的爱, meaning Our Love, is the bands most famous song but they are far from just a one hit wonder.
Check out some of their other hit songs which include Lydia,”, “你的微笑,” and “I Remember”.For reference, that 2nd song there translate to your smile!
Chinese Song #5 – Tónghuà (童話) Michael Wong
Tónghuà (which translates to fairytale) is the lead song, and also the title of Wongs 3rd album, released in 21st January
Michael Wong (王光良) is of Chinese/Malaysian descent and became hugely popular in China due to his ability to reel off multiple, high-quality love songs over and over.Love songs are hugely popular in China FYI.
Despite releasing 5 albums, it was only until this 3rd one, where he really shot to fame.
Before , Wong began his singing career in a duo with Victor Wong, however, they went their own ways and thus began the start of something special.
Wong has proved his ability on the acting scene also, with appearances in Chinese drama and achieving cult fame throughout mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, where he currently resides!
Lucky chap, hats off to you Mr Wong, heres one of his many classics for you to enjoy
Chinese Song #6 – Yuèliàng dàibiǎo wǒ de xīn (月亮代表我的心) Teresa Teng
Quite possibly the most famous Chinese song of all time
Our friend Teresa is back again and this one exceeds her first entry, in terms of all round popularity, if online numbers were defining.
The Moon Represents My Heart is an all time Chinese classic.
The song was released in by Teng, who was actually born in Taiwan.
Sadly Teng passed away due to an asthma attack in but her legacy lives on and her music is heard all over Asia every day in or out of KTV!
According to The New York Times, it is one of the best-known Chinese pop songs of all time
You may no longer be with us Teresa, but thanks for the memories
Chinese Song #7 – Wěnbié (吻别) Jacky Cheung

Chinese Song #8 – Wǒ yuànyì (我愿意) Faye Wong
The Diva as she is referred to in China. Step up, Faye Wong, Beijing born, before moving to Hong Kong in
Wong is adored throughout Asia and in truth, picking one song from her long repertoire is quite the challenge.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Wong and her school had to hide her strong abilities in singing from her mum. Lets say she was on the strict side! Wongs mum saw singing as a dead-end career.
Lucky they hid it, and hid it well because Wong was to take not just China, but Asia by storm.
Wong has released songs in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.
Believe it or not, turned down a 3,, Yuan payday to perform in her hometown of Beijing, for the Olympic Opening Ceremony. This was at the time of her hiatus from performing.
The song we use here is called Im willing in English and was the top hit from her album Mystery.

Chinese Song #10 – Gàobái qìqiú (告白气球) Jay Chou
For anyone with even a smidgen of knowledge of Chinese music, youll probably be shocked its taken until this far to mention the name Jay Chou.
For those of you with zero knowledge of Chinese music this name will probably be unfamiliar. Not anymore.
Jay Chou (周杰伦 Zhōu Jiélún), born in Taiwan, is probably the biggest name in Chinese music since the turn of the millennium.
His discography and popularity is so incredibly broad that perhaps one song doesnt do him any justice at all.
Like many of the artists mentioned above, Jay doesnt just specialise in Music, oh no. His CV boasts
Musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, film producer, actor, and directorNot giving anyone else a chance eh, Jay!
The turn of the new millennium prompted Chou to release his very first album simply titled Jay () at the age of
Hes enjoyed success throughout Asia but perhaps more significantly compared to some of the above, Chou has broken through into the US and Australia, in the Asian communities at least. No mean feat.
