HOST OF CHANGES IMPROVE ENGINE & CHASSIS PERFORMANCE

Kawasaki’s all-new four-stroke KX™250F rose to the top to become one of last year’s best motocross motorcycles. For 2007, Kawasaki improves the championship winning KX250F with a host of engine and chassis modifications designed to extend its performance advantage.

Refinements to Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed KX250F make it an even more potent track weapon. The newest KX250F keeps the outstanding top-end power from last year’s motorcycle, but adds a stronger pull from the bottom of its rev range.

The upgraded engine is complimented by a strengthened five-speed transmission and a revised chassis featuring increased longitudinal rigidity for lighter, quicker steering.

The new KX250F will be available in Kawasaki lime green with new colored wheel hubs, and aggressive race team graphics.

Optional parts for the KX250F include magneto rotors with different inertias, a 12-tooth countershaft sprocket, top mounting clamp for an oversized handlebar, aluminum and steel rear sprockets, solid petal brake rotors for wet races, different springs for the front fork and rear shock, manual decompression lever and cable, and a 20-inch front wheel.

Those who race their KX250F at designated events are eligible to receive support from Team Green™, Kawasaki’s amateur racing support program. Each year, Team Green provides regional support vehicles and highly trained technicians at more than 100 events, offering technical information and assistance to those who race Kawasaki products. Kawasaki also offers a comprehensive contingency program for amateur and professional riders who place well at designated events.

– 249cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine delivers hard-hitting power from mid- to high-rpm
– Wider powerband extends low-rpm torque and increases over-rev

Top End
– New longer, straighter airbox funnel contributes to increased low-rpm response
– Revised carb tuning to suit the engine’s modifications
– New hand polished intake ports. This extremely-smooth surface improves intake flow at every rpm
– Ultra-light thin-stem titanium valves are strengthened by thicker skirts and held by longer guides for increased durability
– Special valve seat material helps prevent wear on the titanium valves
– K-TRIC digital microcomputer controlled ignition system with coil on plug “stick” ignition to save weight and improve performance
– Revised ignition timing improves top-end and over-rev
– Revised piston crown contributes to improved power at high-rpm
– New, looser-fitting piston ring with reduced tension for lower friction

Bottom End
– Crankshaft is surface-hardened for maximum rigidity
– Twin oil pumps ensure proper lubrication and oil scavenging for optimum performance
– Lightweight magnesium clutch, generator and cylinder head covers
Cooling
– New 20mm taller right-side radiator offers increased cooling capacity
– High-capacity Denso radiators are designed to offer superior cooling in a slim profile
– Radiator features more tightly packed cores and a special fin design to deliver superior cooling efficiency

Shifting
– An all-new 5-speed transmission with thicker gears offers improved shifting and increased durability
– New shift drum with modifications to the ratchet mechanism for more positive shifting
– New ball bearing shift shaft improves shifter feel
– New stiffer clutch springs (up roughly 20%) give a more direct feel at the lever
– Teflon lined clutch cable provides smooth action and clutch feel
– Five-speed transmission dogs are beefier to match the engine’s increased power
– Shift drum features new cam for improved shifting feel

Frame
– All-aluminum perimeter frame features composite structure, utilizing forged, extruded and cast components
– Revised frame stiffness works with new front fork tuning for lighter steering and quicker response both on the ground and in the air
– The slim profile of the frame, two-piece radiator shrouds that leave the upper frame spars exposed, and careful design of the remaining bodywork make the KX™250F feel light and narrow beneath the rider
– New works-style aluminum skid plate for added protection

Front Suspension
– New sub springs and revised valving for the Showa twin-chamber fork offer a more progressive response and increased bottoming resistance for lighter, quicker handling and superior suspension action
– Showa twin-chamber fork keeps oil and air in separate chambers for stable damping performance during long motos

Rear Suspension
– New shock spring and revised valving for improved suspension action
– A new rear shock damping adjustment needle allows more precise tuning of the rear suspension
– Alloy swingarm uses cast front section, tapered hydroformed spars and forged chain pullers; the tapered spars are shaped to match the balance of flex and rigidity required of the aluminum frame
– New “sprocket-style” chain roller helps smooth engine braking by reducing drive lash

Brakes
– Revised front brake master cylinder hose joint allows more lever position adjustment
– Front and rear brakes utilize petal discs, helping to reduce overall weight
– Petal discs help to clean the brake pads for more efficient braking performance

Wheels
– Stronger rear rim is laced to a rib-less rear hub with new spoke design that helps reduce unsprung weight

From the Cockpit
– Renthal aluminum handlebar is ultra-strong and reduces overall weight
– Short-length grips feature a special pattern to reduce vibration transmitted from the bars to the rider
– Particular attention was paid to the body work underneath the seat to improve the rider‘s grip on the chassis when standing

The Kawasaki KX250F came out in 2004 to take on the YZ250F from Yamaha.

The 2004 KX250F and Suzuki RM-Z 250 were identical, being manufactured in a joint venture between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Suzuki. They shared the same suspension, frames and engines but the plastics, while being interchangeable, were different colours and shapes. Fast forward to 2006 and the two brands started to get serious about the 250cc four-stroke class, with Suzuki starting to develop its own bike.

The Kawasaki KX250F has a double-overhead cam, liquid-cooled engine with shim-and-bucket style tappets. The engine had trouble with the titanium valves from the beginning. These engines did not take kindly to dust, which would wear out the valves prematurely. If you kept the air filter very clean and oiled and washed it after every ride then the valves would last much longer, but most people chose to run stainless steal valves with upgraded, stronger valve springs as they would last significantly longer.

The front and rear suspension has adjustable compression and rebound damping but the monoshock also has adjustable spring preload. The suspension components are good quality. They rarely have any problems and are completely tunable for any kind of riding.

Receipts
The chassis was often praised for being the lightest and easiest handling in its class. Unfortunately, the engine was often criticised for being unreliable due to those titanium valves.

If you are looking at buying one second hand, ask to see if it has had stainless valves fitted. If it has, then ask if it has also had stiffer valve springs. Often racers looking for the best performance would opt for a set of titanium valves with softer valve seats to stop the valves from wearing so quickly.

If any of this work has been performed then ask if there are receipts to prove it was done professionally. Then ride the bike and make sure it runs well, starts easily and idles with no back firing. Backfiring often means leaking valves, incorrect jetting or, on the Kawasaki KX250F, it can even mean the rubber manifold between the carby and cylinder head could be cracked or leaking or the mixture screw has come loose or has even fallen out.

Check all the wheel and frame bearings for excessive wear and ride the bike to make sure it selects all gears without jumping back out and that the clutch does not slip. Lastly, take a peep inside the airbox. This is the perfect way to see if a bike has been looked after. If the airbox is filthy then that’s a good indication that the air filter has probably not been regularly maintained. Technical Editor Mat Boyd

Kawasaki KX250F

The Kawasaki KX 250F is a liquid-cooled DOHC 249 cc (15.2 cu in) four-valve four-strokesinglemotocrossmotorcycle made by Kawasaki.

The Kawasaki KX250F was co-developed with the Suzuki Motor Co. under their unique joint venture that started in 2002. This joint venture produced the Suzuki RMZ250 which is the mechanical twin to the KX250F but is in yellow Suzuki markings. The first year of the KX250F was 2004 and it saw immediate success in Supercross and Motocross racing capturing the East/West SX championships as well as the national MX title.

For the 2006 model year, Kawasaki took its own separate route in 250F development by releasing an all-new bike that had no ties with Suzuki. The 2006 model features an all-new aluminum perimeter frame, a heavily revised engine, new Showa front and rear shocks, and Renthal handlebars. The new KX was very competitive, ranking highly in motocross magazine shootouts as well as in competition. The 2008 KX250F has continued its reputation as a good bike, being highly regarded in all dirtbike shootouts.

In 2009, Kawasaki overhauled the KX250F with a lot more than a new look. These include numerous engine enhancements to increase power and save weight, upgrades to the suspension, including a titanium coating to reduce friction, and a few chassis changes which help improve cornering and create an overall slimmer feel.

In 2011, Kawasaki added two new major features. The first was a digital fuel injection (DFI) system. This system was similar to the one found on the more powerful KX450F. It greatly improved engine response time and reduced hesitation when landing after a jump. The second addition was Showa's separate function fork (SFF). These new forks lowered weight, improved performance, and allowed for easier adjustability. In 2012, a second fuel injector was added increasing horsepower over the 2011 model.

Kawasaki once again revamped the KX250F in 2013. They created a new look along with enhancements to the fuel injection system and separate function forks.
