Walrus Audio Announces New Slo Multi Texture Reverb

Walrus Audio has announced the Slö Multi Texture Reverb. The new pedal offers three different algorithms “specifically designed to invoke textures for bringing dreams from your subconscious to reality,” according to the company.

The Slö has three modes for shaping new sounds: Dark (Blendable Lower Octave), Rise (Ambient Swell) and Dream (Latching Pad). Secondary functions on the toggle switch allow the user to change between different modulated wave shapes like Sine, Warp and Sink.

Modulation can be further manipulated by holding down the bypass switch and adjusting the depth knob to control modulation speed.

The Slö comes in a “Lollipop Blue” enclosure with artwork by Christi Du Toit. Power requirements are 9VDC, center negative.

The Slö is available for $199.

Review: Walrus Audio Slö Multi Texture Reverb

Sometimes, it’s not all about frenetic sweep picking, ornamental arpeggios or artful blues turnarounds – sometimes, it’s all about texture. Although it might be tempting to dismiss the resurgent ‘shoegaze’ movement as a cynical ploy by pedal companies to shift more units, the fact remains that there is a growing subsection of players (doubtless inspired by the glorious celestial workings of Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, Swervedriver and Ride) whose primary goal is the creation of magic realist, otherworldly atmospheres. It’s this group that Walrus Audio’s latest offering, the Slö Multi Textured Reverb, is aimed at.

As might be expected from a contemporary USA boutique pedal, there’s evidence that much thought has gone into the Slö. The jack and power sockets are top-mounted to make the unit pedalboard-friendly and the knobs are all smooth and precise. There’s a full complement of the usual control suspects: decay, mix and depth, with the added attraction of a filter and another knob simply marked ‘X’, which plays different roles depending on which algorithm has been selected.

A centre-mounted mini-toggle switch gives you access to three reverb types: Dark (adds a lower octave), Rise (ambient swell with a slow attack on the reverb) and Dream (latching pad controlled with the sustain footswitch). Secondary functionality is also accessed when you hold down the bypass switch, which changes the wave shapes of the reverb tail from a smooth sine wave with even pitch modulation (Sine) to warped record (Warp) and Bigsby drop (Sink). This is a somewhat dizzying amount of options and it hints at ethereal possibilities to come.

In use

There’s a lot to unpack with the Slö, but it is apparent from the start that the sounds within are not only extremely high quality but also – and this is crucial – usable. All too often, lush, multi-layered textures are added to pedals and multi-FX units almost as an afterthought but in the Slö, we discover new and thought-provoking sonic landscapes that fit well in both live and recorded mixes with very little tweaking.

Our immediate favourite combinations are jangly Gretsch chords with the Dark sub octave grumbling underneath, summoning a choir of angels behind an acoustic guitar with the Rise setting and the psychonautic experience that is the Dream setting. In conjunction with the sustain switch, the latter allows you to surround yourself with swirling, somnambulant textures as you solo (tastefully) over the top.

Throughout our time with the Slö, we find the control system intuitive, with a large amount of range to each parameter. The bass octave and modulation track well and no matter how hard we push the filter, the top end remains silky and dynamic with not a hint of ‘Christmas reverb’. Fans of self-oscillating, end-of-the-gig pedalboard wig-outs will find a new friend here.

If you’re looking for the most authentic reproduction of a kickable spring reverb tank then the Slö is not for you, but nor is it strictly limited to the Jazzmaster/Strymon enthusiasts out there. This is a powerful pedal with as much to offer soundtrack composers, psychedelic rockers, soundscape artists and electronic-music producers as it does the eBow, Altoids and Instagram brethren.

Walrus Audio Slo Multi Texture Reverb

The Walrus Audio Slo Multi Texture Reverb allows players to create lush, modulated, sleepy and ambient soundscapes. Stocked with three different algorithms specifically designed to invoke textures for bringing dreams from your subconscious to reality.

The toggle switch allows three different reverb modes, Dark (Lower Octave), Rise (Ambient Swell) and Dream (Latching Pad), while secondary functions on the switch change between different wave shapes for the modulation on the reverb trail.

Combine deep modulation with long washy trails and experience, the Slö.

  • DARK – Add a lower octave to your reverb trail. Here you'll create deep and wide atmospheric sounds and channel nightmarish soundscapes. X knob sets the level of a -1 octave signal that feeds the reverb.
  • RISE – This is an auto-swell reverb for beautiful cinematic swells. Don't rush it. Let it breathe and gently wake up. X knob sets the amount of time it takes the reverb to swell in after a note is played. Set lower for shorter rise times and higher for longer rise times.
  • DREAM – Here is a lush reverb with a latching pad function. Press the sustain switch to latch signal. Experiment with the X knob to add vibrato over the pad. Press sustain again and pad will decrescendo according to where decay knob is set. X knob sets the depth of vibrato applied to the reverb trail.

The Slö also features 3 different wave shapes accessible by holding down bypass while switching the algorithm toggle.

  • SINE – Smooth and even pitch up and down modulation
  • WARP – Asymmetric pitch up modulation similar to a warped
  • record
  • SINK – Asymmetric pitch down modulation for sinking detune similar to a Bigsby

  • Bypass: When the switch is in off position, press and hold to temporarily activate the effect to add a moment of reverb texture. Releasing the switch turns the effect off, and fades it out.
  • Sustain: When pressed, the decay switch ramps up the reverb trail to maximum creating long dreamy reverb trail and then ramps back down to the decay knob setting when released. In the “Dream” algorithm, the sustain switch is latching. Press it once to capture and sustain the current reverb decay for extremely long pad-like sounds. Press it again to let the reverb trail taper off, based on the position of the decay knob.

The Slö can run in trails or no trails mode. In trails mode, when you turn the pedal off, the reverb decay dies off naturally. In no trails mode, the decay is abruptly cut off when you turn the pedal off. To toggle between either mode, hold down the bypass switch for 1 second while applying power to the pedal. Unplug power and repeat to toggle to the other mode.

The Slö comes in a Lollipop Blue finish with light blue and off white ink featuring original artwork by Christi Du Toit.

The diecast enclosure’s exact size is 4.77" x 2.6" x 1.39". Power requirements are 9VDC (100 mA minimum).

The use of an isolated power supply is recommended for powering all Walrus Audio Pedals. Daisy chain power supplies are not recommended. Power supply not included.

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, woodwind pads, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year. Pricing for used electronic products is 4% of the original new selling price.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: $40 flat rate up to $2,000 of current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years.
  • BRASS and STRINGS: 2% of the current new selling price above $2,000.
  • WOODWINDS: 4% of the current new selling price above $2,000.
