Jeep oil sending unit DEFAULT

Re: Oil pressure sending unit ground

Thanks for the info.

I'm not very well versed on post-Renix era Jeeps, but since your sending unit grounds thru the harness, the harness grounds are, for the most part, grounded at the oil dipstick mounting bolt. There is a cluster of common grounds there with a terminal ring. Sometimes the connection there can become loose, corroded or both. Funny that that one spot has so much to do with so many components and it's in about the dirtiest spot on the engine.

Clean the area up, remove the bolt, shine everything up and fix any loose or corroded connections...tighten it all up. It's likely that if you're having gauge issues that the sender is toast.

On the Renix models, the sender is just a one wire, grounds thru the block and when the sender goes south it usually pegs out past 80psi or goes to zero.

On a side note: You can go to User CP and fill in the info on your Jeep in your signature, then it pops up in every post you make.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch

Your oil pressure sensor or switch monitors oil pressure in your engine. It sends these signals to the ECU and to your oil pressure gauge or warning light. If the oil pressure sensor in your vehicle stops functioning properly, it could give false readings. The oil light may come on or the gauge may read very high or at zero. Before replacing your oil sending unit, check your oil and listen to your engine. If you're low on oil, add what is needed. If you notice any ticking or clunking noises, or the smell of oil burning, you may have other issues. If you still need to replace your oil pressure sensor or switch, visit O'Reilly Auto Parts for the right part for your repair.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Hey everyone just started the tear down and rebuild of the motor in my 82 Waggy 5.9L 360. I wanted to order new Oil pressure sending unit. I mean why not replace all those little things while I got it out and on the engine stand right?

Anyhow, I noticed that this one seams a little strange. Hence the pic. It looks like there is a sending unit for the gauge, and a sending unit for an idiot light...scratching my hear a little.

I went to a couple of my local parts stores (Yeah Yeah I know). Also searched online a little. I cannot seem to find units that match this configuration.

Anyone got any info on this???

Thank's everyone....

The larger single terminal unit is the sending unit for the gauge. The smaller two pronged unit is a pressure switch used to choke operation. The electric choke won't begin it's pull off until a certain oil pressure is reached.

Note: I've done a little research and no one makes a sending unit for the gauge with the correct terminal and ohm rating. To get the correct ohm rating for the factory gauge you will have to use a sending unit with a different connector that tends to fall off often.

HMT81... Thanks alot for the info. Great to know. Pretty sure I can by pass that choke switch if I am not able to find a replacement. I am going to research the Ohm rating, and connector issue. Maybe I will have to move away from the factory gauges, and go aftermarket.

Be good.....Grizz

i dont know about that plan...the choke wire IIRC is always hot and unfused, if you bypass the switch you may increase the risk of burning up the wire harness and starting a small fire as many people here have had happen. it happens when the constantly hot wire eventually touches the hot engine components and melts and creates a short....a short that has no circuit protection

rick and ristow can confirm my thoughs here i hope.....

This is the first I have ever heard of this. I ordered one from rock auto a year and a half ago, and though the input tube was slightly longer, the sender worked fine. I always thought they were basically just ford sending units anyway. What ohm ranges are we talking here?

I'd be interested in what you find. My dash gauge reads considerably lower than what I get with a mechanical hooked up direct.
As the R's increase from idle, 15~40 on the dash, 25~75 direct. I assumed the sender, but no point in changing it for one just like it.
Not a big deal since I know its wrong, but would prefer it to be accurate without hanging something ugly under the dash.

I would also be interested to know what the ohm ranges are. The one I bought from Rock Auto is much larger in Diameter, with a longer input tube, and a different connector.

I'll have to sit down on my computer again and dig up the info. I'm on my phone at work right now.

On a mildly related subject. Because of the 15 years that my Waggy sat in my Grand-Dad's yard in Montana, The dash cover, and the instrument cluster have been warped by the Montana summers, and winters. I am considering building a new instrument cluster. Can I replace that OEM sending unit with a newer technology? Still utilizing the choke switch etc. Just thinking out loud really. I have found some pretty nice looking gauges that are similar in size to the factory ones.... Thoughts anyone

Yes, you can replace/modify/build whatever you're capable of...

BJ's sells gauge panel overlays as headstart to installing custom gauges.

Many people have replaced the stockers with aftermarket.

Well I did manage to find an oil sending unit. However the threads are in 1/4 NPT, and the block that the original came out of is 1/8 NPT. For some odd reason I did find a reducer in my drawer of misc tractor parts, but it's brass.
Anyone think there could be an issue, going from a machined steel block, through a brass adapter to the sending unit?
